Chapter 12 - A Father Is Tested

The DNA report spread across the internet within hours.
News anchors debated whether Bella had any right to inherit the Sterling fortune.
Commentators called Evelyn a liar.
Some claimed Arthur had known all along.
Vanessa demanded custody again, arguing Bella had no biological connection to Arthur.
Arthur locked himself in his office.
I found him sitting in darkness.
“Do you believe the report?” I asked.
“I don’t know.”
“That wasn’t my question.”
He looked at me.
“Does it matter?”
“It mattered when Bella called you Daddy and you hesitated.”
He closed his eyes.
“I failed her.”
“Yes.”
I did not soften it.
He stood and walked into Bella’s room.
She sat on the floor beside the stuffed rabbit.
Arthur knelt.
“I don’t care what that test says.”
Bella did not look at him.
“You stopped.”
“For one second.”
“You stopped.”
Arthur’s voice broke.
“You are my daughter because I chose you every day from the moment you were born.”
Bella finally looked up.
“You didn’t choose me when Mommy died.”
He had no defense.
“I hid in my work,” he said. “I left you with people I should have questioned. I told myself I was protecting you by finding the truth.”
“You left me alone.”
“Yes.”
The honesty reached her.
Arthur did not ask for forgiveness.
He simply sat beside her.
After a long silence, Bella leaned against him.
The next morning, an independent DNA test proved Margaret’s report was fake.
Bella was Arthur’s biological daughter.
But Arthur refused to release the result publicly.
“Why?” I asked.
“Because her worth was never supposed to depend on it.”
For the first time, he was acting like a father instead of a Sterling.
Then federal agents arrived.
They arrested Arthur for conspiracy, fraud, and illegal weapons transfers.
Every document carried his signature.

Margaret had made sure of that.
