Chapter 20 - The Door I Chose to Open

Years later, people still asked me the same question.

Did I know what would happen when I smelled burning hair that night?

No.

I thought I was about to lose my job.

I thought Vanessa would have me arrested.

I thought Arthur would believe her.

I had no idea that opening one bathroom door would expose a criminal empire, destroy one of the most powerful families in America, and change Bella’s life forever.

I only knew a child was in danger.

So I moved.

That was all.

Arthur never rebuilt Sterling Heavy Industries.

He built something better.

Bella grew into a fierce young woman who spoke for children no one believed.

My mother lived long enough to see her graduate.

And me?

I stopped thinking of myself as the desperate nanny who had nowhere else to go.

I became the woman who stayed.

Not because I was trapped.

Because I chose to.

Sometimes people imagine courage as a grand decision.

It rarely is.

Sometimes courage is a dropped laundry basket.

A locked door.

A frightened child.

And one moment when you decide that losing everything is better than walking away.

That night, I opened the door.

May you like

And none of us were ever silent again.
