Chapter 9 - THE RECORDING THAT REVEALED EVERYTHING

I couldn’t speak.

For several seconds, I just stared at Chloe.

An unfit mother.

Those words cut deeper than anything Julian had said before.

Because there was one thing I knew.

I had given everything to Leo.

Every second.

Every breath.

Every piece of myself.

And Julian wanted to rewrite history.

“He wanted to take Leo from me?”

Chloe nodded slowly.

“I think so.”

I closed my eyes.

The memories came rushing back.

The hospital.

The doctors.

The nights I refused to leave Leo’s side.

The mornings I woke up sitting beside his bed.

And Julian…

Always leaving.

Always saying he had work.

Always saying he was handling things.

I finally understood.

He wasn’t helping.

He was building a case.

Against me.

“Why are you telling me this now?”

Chloe looked ashamed.

“Because Leo died.”

Her voice cracked.

“And I realized I was helping someone who was destroying the only person who truly loved that little boy.”

I looked away.

I didn’t forgive her.

Not yet.

Maybe not ever.

But I believed her.

“Do you have proof?”

She nodded.

“Yes.”

She pulled out her phone.

“I recorded him.”

My eyes widened.

“When?”

“Two weeks before Leo passed.”

She pressed play.

At first, there was only background noise.

Then Julian’s voice.

“I just need time.”

Another voice.

Chloe.

“What about Clara?”

Julian answered:

“She’s emotional. She won’t think clearly.”

My hands started shaking.

Then:

“She’s too attached to that house.”

My heart stopped.

The house.

Again.

Chloe’s voice:

“She’s grieving.”

Julian laughed softly.

“That’s exactly why this is the perfect time.”

I felt cold.

The perfect time.

For what?

The recording continued.

“I need control before she realizes what’s happening.”

I looked at Chloe.

“Turn it off.”

She did.

I couldn’t listen anymore.

Because I finally understood.

Julian didn’t wake up one morning and become cruel.

He had been planning.

Waiting.

Watching.

Daniel arrived thirty minutes later.

When he saw the recording, his expression changed.

“This changes everything.”

“Can we use it?”

“Yes.”

“For what?”

“Fraud. Manipulation. Possibly criminal charges.”

I looked at the recording.

The proof.

The evidence.

The truth.

For the first time…

Julian was vulnerable.

But then Daniel received a message.

His face changed.

“What?”

He read it again.

“Daniel?”

He looked at me.

“Clara…”

“What?”

“There’s a problem.”

“What problem?”

He turned the phone around.

A news alert appeared.

“Local businessman Julian Sterling announces expansion of new family trust.”

My blood ran cold.

“He went public.”

Daniel nodded.

“And Clara…”

“What?”

“He listed Chloe’s unborn child as the primary beneficiary.”

I stared at the screen.

Julian wasn’t hiding anymore.

He thought he had already won.

He thought the world would believe his story.

But he made one mistake.

He forgot one thing.

A person who has lost everything…

May you like

Has nothing left to fear.

And I was done being afraid.
