Chapter 13 - THE COURTROOM WHERE THE TRUTH CAME OUT

The courtroom was colder than I expected.
Maybe it wasn’t the temperature.
Maybe it was the feeling of sitting across from the man who once promised to love me forever.
Julian sat beside his attorney.
Perfect suit.
Calm expression.
The same confidence he always had.
The confidence of someone who believed he could talk his way out of anything.
For a moment, I remembered the man I married.
The man who held my hand during Leo’s birth.
The man who cried when he first held our son.
And then I remembered the man standing across from me now.
The man who tried to erase us.
“Mrs. Sterling?”
The judge’s voice brought me back.
“Yes, Your Honor.”
Julian’s attorney stood.
“Your Honor, my client is requesting temporary control of marital assets because there are concerns about Mrs. Sterling’s emotional stability.”
There it was.
The lie.
The same weapon.
I looked at Julian.
He didn’t even look guilty.
He looked confident.
Like he had already won.
The attorney continued.
“My client believes Mrs. Sterling’s grief has affected her judgment.”
I felt my hands tighten.
Grief.
They were using my son’s death against me.
Again.
Daniel stood.
“Your Honor, we are prepared to respond.”
The judge nodded.
“Proceed.”
Daniel walked forward.
“Mrs. Sterling is not emotionally unstable.”
He placed a folder on the table.
“She is a grieving mother who has been targeted by a calculated financial scheme.”
Julian’s expression changed.
Only slightly.
But I noticed.
Daniel continued.
“We have evidence showing Mr. Sterling attempted unauthorized transfers of property and financial assets.”
The opposing attorney immediately objected.
“Speculation.”
“Not speculation.”
Daniel placed another document down.
“Records.”
The judge reviewed the papers.
Julian shifted in his seat.
For the first time…
He looked nervous.
Then his attorney stood again.
“Your Honor, these accusations are exaggerated.”
Daniel smiled slightly.
“Then perhaps Mr. Sterling can explain this.”
He handed over a document.
The courtroom became silent.
The judge looked at Julian.
“Mr. Sterling, is this your signature?”
Julian hesitated.
“Yes.”
“And this document was created before your wife was aware of any transfer?”
Julian’s attorney interrupted.
“Your Honor—”
The judge raised a hand.
“Answer the question.”
Julian swallowed.
“Yes.”
A quiet reaction moved through the courtroom.
Daniel turned.
“And why was Mr. Sterling creating financial arrangements involving his wife’s assets without her knowledge?”
Nobody answered.
Because everyone already knew.
Then Daniel played the recording.
Julian’s own voice filled the room.
“I just need time.”
Then:
“She’s emotional. She won’t think clearly.”
Then:
“This is the perfect time.”
I watched Julian’s face.
The confidence disappeared.
For the first time…
He looked like the person he truly was.
Someone who had been caught.
The judge listened carefully.
When the recording ended, the room was silent.
Then the judge looked at Julian.
“Mr. Sterling, do you have an explanation?”
Julian looked at me.
And something strange happened.
He looked angry.
Not because he was caught.
Because I had beaten him.
“You did this.”
His voice was barely a whisper.
I looked at him.
“No.”
I shook my head.
“You did.”
The hearing continued for another hour.
By the end, the judge issued a temporary order protecting my assets.
Julian couldn’t touch the house.
Couldn’t access the accounts.
Couldn’t transfer anything.
But as we walked out…
Daniel’s phone rang.
He answered.
Then his face changed.
“What?”
I stopped.
“What happened?”
He looked at me.
“Clara…”
My stomach tightened.
“What?”
“They found another account.”
“Whose?”
Daniel looked at me.
“Leo’s.”
I froze.
“My son had an account?”
Daniel nodded slowly.
“And Julian accessed it.”
May you like
The world went quiet.
Because Leo’s name had just appeared in the middle of Julian’s biggest lie.
