Chapter 10 - THE MAN WHO THOUGHT I WAS BROKEN

The news article stayed on my screen for hours.

“Julian Sterling Announces Future Family Trust.”

Future family.

Those two words made my stomach turn.

Because everyone reading that headline would see a successful man starting over.

A man building a new life.

Nobody would see the truth.

Nobody would see the woman he destroyed.

Nobody would see the little boy he left behind.

Nobody would see the mother who was still waking up every morning hoping, for one impossible second, that Leo was still alive.

“He wants everyone to believe his story,” Daniel said.

I looked up.

“What story?”

“That he’s the victim.”

I laughed quietly.

“The victim?”

Daniel nodded.

“Think about it. He leaves his wife after their child dies. He announces a new family. He creates a trust. He makes himself look like someone moving forward.”

I stared at the article.

“And I become the grieving, unstable ex-wife.”

“Exactly.”

My hands tightened around my coffee cup.

“He planned the whole image.”

“Yes.”

I looked out the window.

For months, Julian had been controlling the story.

But stories could change.

Especially when the truth finally arrived.

“What do we do?”

Daniel opened his laptop.

“We attack the foundation.”

“The trust?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

“By proving the money used to create it wasn’t his.”

I nodded.

“My inheritance.”

“Exactly.”

Daniel pulled up financial records.

“Your grandmother left you a protected inheritance.”

“I know.”

“But after your marriage, Julian convinced you to combine certain accounts.”

I looked down.

“I trusted him.”

“I know.”

“And he used that.”

“Yes.”

I closed my eyes.

I remembered that conversation.

Eight years earlier.

Julian sitting across from me at our kitchen table.

“Clara, we’re married now. We should share everything.”

At the time, it sounded romantic.

Now it sounded like a trap.

“Can we prove it?”

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.”

“How?”

“We find where every dollar went.”

For the next several hours, we followed the money.

And what we found made my blood run cold.

Julian had moved funds through multiple accounts.

Small transfers.

Carefully hidden.

But there was one large transfer.

A transfer made exactly one month before Leo’s diagnosis.

I stared at the screen.

“Why then?”

Daniel zoomed in.

The receiving account appeared.

Sterling Holdings.

The company I never knew existed.

“What was he buying?”

Daniel opened another file.

A property.

A second house.

I frowned.

“Where?”

He showed me the address.

My heart stopped.

Because I knew that address.

It was Chloe’s apartment building.

I stood up.

“No.”

Daniel looked at me.

“What?”

“He bought her a place?”

The silence answered.

My husband wasn’t just cheating.

He was building a second life.

With my money.

While our son was sick.

I felt tears coming.

But they weren’t tears of sadness.

They were anger.

Pure anger.

That night, I returned to my house.

Not because I wanted to see Julian.

Because I needed to see something.

I walked upstairs to Leo’s room.

The room was empty now.

His toys were gone.

His drawings were gone.

His little bed was gone.

The emptiness hurt.

But then I noticed something.

A small mark on the wall.

A pencil line.

Leo’s height.

Three years old.

Three and a half.

Four years old.

I touched it.

And whispered:

“I’m still here, baby.”

Then I heard footsteps.

I turned.

Julian stood in the doorway.

“You shouldn’t be here.”

I looked at him.

“Neither should you.”

His face hardened.

“This isn’t a game.”

“No.”

I nodded.

“It’s not.”

“You don’t understand what you’re doing.”

I almost smiled.

“That’s funny.”

“What?”

“You’ve said that every time you’re losing.”

His jaw tightened.

“You think Daniel can save you?”

“No.”

I looked around the room.

“My son saved me.”

Julian stared at me.

“What are you talking about?”

“Before Leo left, he taught me something.”

“What?”

I walked closer.

“Never give up on someone you love.”

For the first time…

Julian looked uncomfortable.

Then his phone rang.

He answered.

His expression changed.

“What?”

A pause.

Then:

“Who found that?”

My eyes narrowed.

“What happened?”

He ignored me.

“No. Fix it.”

Another pause.

His face became pale.

Then he whispered:

“They have the documents?”

My heart started beating faster.

Documents.

Which documents?

Julian looked at me.

And I knew.

May you like

Whatever he just heard…

Changed everything.
