Chapter 3 - THE WOMAN WHO STOLE MY FAMILY

For a moment, I couldn’t move.

I just sat inside my car.

Watching.

Chloe.

My best friend.

The woman who knew every detail of my life.

The woman who knew how much Leo meant to me.

She was standing in front of my house like she belonged there.

Like she had always belonged there.

Then Julian walked outside.

He smiled when he saw her.

A smile I hadn’t seen in months.

Maybe years.

That hurt more than I expected.

Because I realized something.

Julian wasn’t grieving.

He was celebrating.

I stepped out of my car.

Both of them turned.

Chloe’s face changed immediately.

Shock.

Fear.

Guilt.

“Clara…”

I looked at her.

“Don’t.”

She swallowed.

“I know this looks bad.”

I almost laughed.

“Looks bad?”

I pointed toward the house.

“My son’s room is still upstairs.”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Clara, I never wanted to hurt you.”

“Then why are you here?”

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Because there was no answer that could make sense.

Julian stepped between us.

“Enough.”

I looked at him.

“Enough?”

“Yes. This isn’t helping anyone.”

I stared at him.

“Anyone?”

My voice rose.

“You mean you and Chloe?”

His face hardened.

“Watch your words.”

“No.”

I stepped closer.

“For eight years, I protected you. I loved you. I built a family with you.”

My voice broke.

“And you replaced me before my son was even buried.”

Chloe looked down.

For a second, I saw something.

Regret.

But then Julian spoke.

“You need to leave.”

I smiled.

A small, cold smile.

“No.”

His eyebrows tightened.

“What?”

“I said no.”

“This is my house.”

That was the moment.

The moment he revealed everything.

I looked directly at him.

“No, Julian.”

I held up the folder.

“It isn’t.”

His face changed.

Only slightly.

But I saw it.

Fear.

Real fear.

“What is that?”

I opened the folder.

“The original deed.”

The silence was immediate.

Chloe looked between us.

“What does that mean?”

I didn’t take my eyes off Julian.

“It means this house belongs to me.”

Julian laughed.

But it sounded forced.

“You don’t understand.”

“Oh, I understand perfectly.”

“No, Clara. You’re emotional. You’re grieving.”

There it was.

The excuse.

The way he tried to make me look unstable.

I stepped closer.

“Don’t use my grief against me.”

His face turned pale.

“You need to calm down.”

I laughed.

“Funny. You said the same thing when Leo was dying.”

That hit him.

For the first time…

He looked uncomfortable.

Because he remembered.

The hospital.

The machines.

The nights.

The moment we lost our son.

But then his expression changed again.

Cold.

Calculated.

“You think a piece of paper changes everything?”

“No.”

I looked at Chloe.

Then back at him.

“But it changes everything for you.”

Julian stepped forward.

“You have no idea what you’re doing.”

Maybe he was right.

Maybe I didn’t know everything.

But I knew enough.

Because Daniel called me while I was standing there.

I answered.

“Clara,” he said.

His voice sounded serious.

“I found something.”

I turned away from Julian.

“What?”

A pause.

Then Daniel said:

“Julian filed paperwork three weeks ago.”

My heartbeat stopped.

“What paperwork?”

“He tried to transfer ownership of the house.”

The world went silent.

“He tried to what?”

Daniel lowered his voice.

“And Clara…”

“What?”

“He didn’t just try to transfer the property.”

My fingers tightened around the phone.

“What else?”

Daniel took a breath.

“He tried to put the house into a trust.”

“Whose trust?”

Another pause.

Then:

“Chloe’s unborn child.”

I looked at Julian.

He was watching me.

And suddenly…

I understood.

This was never about kicking me out.

This was never just about cheating.

Julian wasn’t trying to replace me.

May you like

He was trying to erase me.

And he almost succeeded.
