Chapter 2 - THE DOCUMENTS HE DIDN’T KNOW I HAD

I barely slept that night.

Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Leo.

His smile.

His little hands.

The way he used to run into my arms after daycare screaming, “Mommy, I missed you!”

And then I saw Julian.

Standing in our kitchen.

Three hours after burying our son.

Telling me to leave.

At 5:17 in the morning, I gave up trying to sleep.

I sat on the edge of the hotel bed and stared at the deed sitting on the nightstand.

The paper looked ordinary.

A few signatures.

A few legal words.

But that document represented something Julian had forgotten.

Power.

Control.

Protection.

My grandmother always told me one thing:

“Clara, never let anyone convince you that what you built isn’t yours.”

At the time, I thought she was talking about money.

Now I understood.

She was talking about people.

I picked up my phone and called the one person I trusted with legal matters.

My attorney.

Daniel Brooks.

He answered on the third ring.

“Clara?”

His voice immediately changed.

He knew about Leo.

Everyone knew.

“Daniel, I need you to look at something.”

There was a pause.

“Are you okay?”

“No.”

I looked down at the deed.

“But I need answers.”

Twenty minutes later, I sent him pictures of every page.

The response came quickly.

“Clara, where are you?”

“At a hotel.”

“Why?”

I closed my eyes.

“Julian kicked me out.”

Silence.

Then:

“What?”

“He told me Chloe is pregnant.”

Another silence.

But this one was different.

Angry.

“Chloe?”

“Yes.”

Daniel exhaled slowly.

“Clara, listen to me carefully. Do not go back there alone.”

“Why?”

“Because if Julian is asking about property documents while you’re dealing with your son’s medical crisis, that wasn’t random.”

My stomach tightened.

“What are you saying?”

“I’m saying he may have been preparing something.”

I looked at the deed again.

“What kind of something?”

Daniel didn’t answer immediately.

“Let me check a few things first.”

That scared me more than anything.

Because Daniel wasn’t a man who avoided answers.

He was a man who knew when the truth was dangerous.

“I need you to promise me something,” he said.

“What?”

“Don’t tell Julian you found the deed.”

“Why?”

“Because if he thinks you’re unaware, you have an advantage.”

An advantage.

The words felt strange.

I wasn’t trying to win.

I was trying to survive.

After we hung up, I sat there staring at Leo’s picture.

“I’m sorry, baby,” I whispered.

“I should have seen it.”

I thought about all those nights in the hospital.

All those hours beside Leo’s bed.

While I was praying for my son to live…

Julian was asking about my house.

My hands curled into fists.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

“Hello?”

No response.

Just breathing.

“Who is this?”

Click.

They hung up.

A cold feeling crawled up my spine.

Five minutes later, another message appeared.

From Julian.

“Come get your things tomorrow. I don’t want drama.”

I stared at the screen.

Drama.

That was what he called losing a child?

That was what he called betrayal?

I typed a response.

Then deleted it.

Because Daniel was right.

Julian thought he had control.

Let him keep believing that.

The next morning, I drove back to the house.

Not as a wife returning home.

As the legal owner returning to her property.

But when I pulled into the driveway…

I saw something that made my heart stop.

A moving truck was parked outside.

And Chloe was standing on my front porch.

May you like

Holding a set of keys.
