Chapter 5 - THE WOMAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH

Daniel spent the entire day searching through Emily’s old belongings.

Three years of memories.

Three years of unanswered questions.

He opened boxes he had never touched.

Letters.

Photos.

Documents.

Then he found something strange.

A small notebook hidden inside one of Emily’s old handbags.

The first page had only one sentence.

“If you are reading this, I failed.”

Daniel’s hands tightened.

He turned the page.

Emily had written names.

Dates.

Locations.

And one name appeared again and again.

Lauren Ashford.

His wife.

Daniel sat down slowly.

“No
”

He didn’t want to believe it.

But the evidence kept appearing.

Emily had been investigating Lauren before she died.

Why?

Because Lauren wasn’t the person she claimed to be.

That evening, Daniel confronted her.

Lauren was sitting in the dining room when he walked in.

“We need to talk.”

She smiled.

“About Noah?”

“About Emily.”

The smile disappeared.

Daniel placed the notebook on the table.

Lauren looked at it.

Only for a second.

But Daniel noticed.

She recognized it.

“You know this notebook.”

Lauren quickly looked away.

“No.”

“You answered too fast.”

She stood up.

“Daniel, your son was hurt. Your emotions are controlling you.”

“My emotions?”

His voice became colder.

“My son said you pushed him.”

Lauren’s face hardened.

“He’s a child.”

“He’s my child.”

Silence.

For the first time, Lauren saw something she had never seen before.

Daniel wasn’t defending her.

He was protecting Noah.

“You’re really going to believe a maid and a six-year-old boy over your wife?”

Daniel stared at her.

“I’m going to believe the truth.”

Lauren stepped closer.

“You don’t know what you’re doing.”

Daniel lowered his voice.

“No. But I know what you’re afraid of.”

Lauren froze.

“What?”

“You’re afraid I’ll find out what happened to Emily.”

For a moment

Lauren said nothing.

That silence was the answer.

Later that night, Noah woke up screaming.

Daniel rushed into his room.

“Noah?”

The boy was sweating.

“He came back.”

Daniel sat beside him.

“Who?”

“The man.”

Noah looked toward the closet.

“The man who hurt Mommy.”

Daniel checked the room.

Nothing.

Then Noah grabbed his father’s hand.

“Dad
”

“What?”

“He didn’t come for me.”

Daniel frowned.

“What do you mean?”

May you like

Noah whispered:

“He came for something Mommy hid.”
