Chapter 12 - THE TRUTH FINALLY SPEAKS

Lauren stared at Marcus.
âYou recorded me?â
Marcus smiled slightly.
âEvery word.â
Her confidence disappeared.
Victor looked around.
âYou called the police?â
Daniel shook his head.
âNo.â
He looked at Lauren.
âShe did.â
Lauren frowned.
âWhat?â
Daniel pointed toward the phone in Marcusâs hand.
âThe call you made before entering this warehouse.â
Laurenâs face turned pale.
âYou tracked me.â
âI knew you would come.â
Daniel looked toward Noah.
âBecause you always believed you were smarter than everyone else.â
Police officers moved toward them.
But Lauren suddenly laughed.
Everyone stopped.
âYou still donât understand.â
Daniel stared.
âWhat?â
Lauren looked at him.
âYou think catching us fixes everything?â
Her smile returned.
âThere are things you still donât know.â
Danielâs expression hardened.
âTell me.â
Lauren shook her head.
âYouâll find out.â
The officers took her away.
Victor followed.
But before leaving, he looked at Daniel.
âAsk yourself one question.â
Daniel didnât answer.
Victor continued:
âWhy did Emily hide the evidence from you?â
Then he was gone.
Later that night, Noah slept peacefully in the hospital.
Daniel sat beside him.
Holding his sonâs hand.
For the first time in daysâŠ
There was silence.
But Daniel couldnât forget Victorâs words.
Why did Emily hide things from him?
Why didnât she tell him everything?
Marcus entered the room.
âWe found something.â
Daniel looked up.
âWhat?â
Marcus placed a file on the table.
âItâs from Emilyâs final investigation.â
Daniel opened it.
Inside were financial records.
Photos.
Names.
And one name circled in red.
Danielâs heart dropped.
Because it wasnât Lauren.
It wasnât Victor.
It was someone else.
Someone he had trusted for years.
Someone who had attended Emilyâs funeral.
Someone who had comforted him after her death.
Daniel whispered:
âNoâŠâ
Marcus looked at him.
âWho is it?â
Daniel stared at the name.
And realized the nightmare wasnât over.

Because the person who helped destroy his familyâŠ
