Chapter 10 - THE LETTER EMILY LEFT BEHIND

Daniel stared at the envelope for several seconds.
His name was written across the front.
Not typed.
Not printed.
Written by hand.
Emilyâs handwriting.
The same handwriting he had seen in old birthday cards, love letters, and notes she left beside his coffee every morning.
His fingers trembled as he opened it.
Inside was a single piece of paper.
Only a few sentences.
But every word felt like a knife.
Daniel, if you are reading this, then they failed to erase everything.
He stopped breathing.
Maya watched his face carefully.
âIs it from her?â
Daniel nodded.
He continued reading.
I need you to understand something. I did not die because of an accident. I died because I found the truth about the people closest to us.
Daniel closed his eyes.
For three years, he had blamed himself.
He had replayed that night thousands of times.
The phone call.
The hospital.
The empty chair at the dinner table.
He had believed he lost Emily because fate was cruel.
But now he realizedâŠ
Someone had taken her from him.
The letter continued.
Lauren and Victor are not the only ones involved. There is someone else. Someone with power. Someone who can make evidence disappear.
Daniel looked at Maya.
âSomeone else?â
Maya slowly nodded.
âEmily always believed there was someone above them.â
Daniel kept reading.
I hid the final evidence somewhere only Noah could find. Because Noah was the only person I trusted completely.
Daniel froze.
âNoah?â
Maya looked confused.
âHe was six years old.â
Emilyâs words continued.
People underestimate children. They think they forget. They think they donât understand. But Noah saw everything that night.
Danielâs heart stopped.
The night Emily died.
Noah had been there.
He had always thought his son was too young to remember.
But maybeâŠ
He had remembered everything.
At the abandoned building, Noah sat quietly across from Victor.
Victor watched him carefully.
âYouâre not scared?â
Noah looked at him.
âI am.â
The honesty surprised Victor.
âThen why arenât you crying?â
Noah lowered his eyes.
âBecause Mommy told me bad people like when youâre scared.â
Victorâs face tightened.
Emily.
Even after death, she was still fighting him.
âWhat else did your mother tell you?â
Noah didnât answer.
Victor stepped closer.
âWhere is the evidence?â
Noah looked at him.
âYou already lost.â
Victor laughed.
âYouâre six years old.â
Noah shook his head.
âNo.â
His voice became stronger.
âYouâre the one whoâs scared.â
For the first timeâŠ
Victor Hale looked uncertain.
Back at the mansion, Daniel received another message.
A location.
No words.
Only coordinates.
Marcus checked it.
âItâs an old warehouse outside the city.â
Daniel grabbed his jacket.
âIâm going.â
Marcus stopped him.
âNot alone.â
Daniel looked at him.
âMy son is there.â
Marcus nodded.
âAnd whoever took him knows youâre coming.â
Daniel looked at the photograph of Emily one last time.
Then he whispered:
âIâm bringing him home.â
But as they left the mansionâŠ
May you like
Someone inside watched them from the shadows.
Someone who knew exactly where they were going.
