Chapter 4 - THE WOMAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH

Michael stared at the photograph.

His father had been dead for five years.

But there he was.

Standing next to Sophia.

Both smiling.

Both hiding something.

Michael’s hands shook.

“No…”

He looked closer.

The date was printed on the back.

Three months before his father died.

Sophia had lied.

She had known more than she admitted.

When Michael confronted her, Sophia immediately became defensive.

“Where did you get that?”

Michael noticed.

Not denial.

Not confusion.

Fear.

“You recognize it.”

Sophia looked away.

“Michael…”

“No.”

His voice hardened.

“You’re going to answer me.”

She stayed silent.

“What was my father involved in?”

Sophia’s eyes filled with tears.

“He made mistakes.”

“What mistakes?”

“The kind people don’t forgive.”

Michael stepped closer.

“What does that mean?”

Sophia whispered:

“He wasn’t the man you thought he was.”

Michael spent the next several hours searching through old documents.

Bank records.

Emails.

Photos.

Anything connected to his father.

Then he found something.

A hidden account.

Money transferred every month.

To someone named:

Sophia Reed.

His sister.

Michael felt sick.

She had been receiving money.

For years.

That night, Emily called him.

“Michael?”

Her voice sounded weak.

“Are you alone?”

“Yes.”

“Good.”

A pause.

Then:

“I need to tell you what I found.”

“What?”

“Your father wasn’t just hiding money.”

Michael listened.

“He was hiding a woman.”

Michael froze.

“What woman?”

Emily whispered:

“The woman who gave birth to Sophia.”

Michael sat down.

“What?”

“Sophia isn’t your father’s only child.”

Silence.

Michael felt the room spinning.

“What are you saying?”

Emily took a breath.

“I’m saying Sophia knew exactly who she was.”

“And she spent her whole life pretending she didn’t.”

Michael looked toward the window.

The truth was becoming darker.

Sophia wasn’t just lying about the staircase.

She wasn’t just stealing a folder.

She was hiding her entire identity.

Then his phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

A woman’s voice spoke.

“Michael Carter?”

“Yes.”

“You need to stop investigating your sister.”

Michael froze.

“Who is this?”

The woman whispered:

“The person who knows why Sophia pushed your wife.”

The call ended.

May you like

And Michael realized…

Someone else had been watching.
