Chapter 13 - THE LAST SECRET

Nobody spoke.

The room felt smaller.

Heavier.

Like the walls themselves were holding their breath.

Michael stared at his mother.

The woman who had tucked him into bed as a child.

The woman who had held his hand when he was scared.

The woman he trusted more than anyone.

And now…

She was standing in front of him with a secret that had destroyed his entire family.

“What did you mean?”

Michael’s voice was low.

“What does my baby have to do with my father’s death?”

His mother smiled.

Not a happy smile.

A tired one.

The kind of smile someone gives when they think the truth no longer matters.

“Your father was going to tell you everything.”

“Everything about what?”

“About your family.”

Michael stepped forward.

“Stop speaking in riddles.”

For the first time, his mother looked angry.

“You think you know what happened?”

“You think your father was some innocent victim?”

She laughed.

“He spent his whole life hiding behind a perfect image.”

Emily held Mason close.

“Then why hurt innocent people?”

Michael’s mother looked at her.

“You.”

Everyone became silent.

“Why me?”

“Because your baby is not just your baby.”

Michael froze.

“What?”

His mother looked at Emily’s stomach.

“That child carries the bloodline your father wanted to protect.”

Michael’s face changed.

“What are you talking about?”

Sophia suddenly whispered:

“The inheritance.”

His mother looked at Sophia.

“Yes.”

The room went cold.

“The company.”

“The money.”

“The property.”

“Everything your father owned.”

She looked at Michael.

“It was never meant for you.”

Michael felt his chest tighten.

“It was meant for my child.”

His mother nodded.

“And that’s why your father had to die.”

Michael couldn’t believe what he was hearing.

“You killed him because of an inheritance?”

His mother shook her head.

“No.”

A pause.

“I killed him because he was going to destroy me.”

“How?”

She looked at him.

“Your father discovered I was working with Daniel.”

Sophia’s face changed.

“You knew?”

His mother smiled.

“Of course I knew.”

Michael looked between them.

“You two…”

He couldn’t finish the sentence.

His own mother.

His sister.

Daniel.

All connected.

A lifetime of lies.

Then Mason stepped forward.

“But Grandma…”

Everyone looked at him.

The little boy’s voice was shaking.

“Why did you hurt Mom?”

Michael’s mother stared at him.

For a moment…

She looked human.

Then the cold expression returned.

“Because adults make difficult choices.”

Mason shook his head.

“No.”

His voice became stronger.

“Bad people make bad choices.”

The words hit the room.

Even Michael was surprised.

His mother looked at him.

And for the first time…

She looked afraid.

Then a sound came from outside.

A car door.

Michael turned.

Someone was arriving.

The front door opened.

Daniel walked in.

Everyone froze.

Michael immediately moved in front of Emily and Mason.

“You.”

Daniel looked around.

Then smiled.

“So.”

He looked at Michael’s mother.

“You finally told him.”

Michael stared.

“You two worked together?”

Daniel laughed.

“Worked together?”

He looked at her.

“No.”

His smile disappeared.

“She used me.”

Michael looked confused.

“What?”

Daniel stepped closer.

“Your mother promised me everything.”

“She told me your father stole my life.”

“She told me revenge would fix everything.”

His eyes became darker.

“But when I was done…”

“She tried to erase me too.”

Michael looked at his mother.

She said nothing.

Because it was true.

Daniel looked at Michael.

“You see now?”

“My anger was real.”

“My pain was real.”

“But she created the monster.”

Michael clenched his fists.

“You hurt my wife.”

Daniel looked away.

“I know.”

“You almost killed my child.”

Daniel’s expression changed.

For one second…

Regret appeared.

Then his mother spoke.

“Don’t listen to him.”

Everyone turned.

She reached into her purse.

And pulled out a gun.

The room froze.

Michael’s heart stopped.

“Mom…”

She looked at him.

“I’m sorry.”

Then she pointed the gun.

Not at Daniel.

Not at Sophia.

At Emily.

May you like

And whispered:

“Your father should have chosen me.”
