Chapter 11 - THE SECOND BETRAYAL

Michael and Sophia left the house immediately.
They didn’t know who was watching.
They didn’t know who they could trust.
And that was the most dangerous part.
Everyone had a secret.
Everyone had lied.
Even the people Michael thought he knew.
At the hospital, Emily woke up.
The first thing she saw was Michael.
But she didn’t smile.
She looked afraid.
“What happened?”
Michael grabbed her hand.
“I’m sorry.”
Emily looked at him.
“You keep saying that.”
“I know.”
“But you still haven’t told me why.”
Michael took a breath.
Because she deserved the truth.
“All of this happened because of a folder.”
Emily closed her eyes.
“I knew it.”
“You knew?”
She nodded.
“I found it two weeks ago.”
Michael froze.
“What?”
Emily looked toward the window.
“Your father sent me a letter before he died.”
Michael stared.
“My father?”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
Emily looked at him.
“Because I was scared.”
“Of what?”
“That you would choose your family over me.”
The words hurt.
Because she was right.
He had done exactly that.
Emily explained everything.
The folder was not just about money.
It contained proof.
Proof that Daniel had been manipulated.
Proof that Sophia had been controlled.
Proof that someone had been moving behind the scenes for years.
“Who?”
Emily looked at him.
“I don’t know.”
Before Michael could answer…
The hospital lights went out.
Every machine stopped.
The hallway went dark.
A nurse shouted outside.
“Emergency power!”
Michael stood immediately.
Something was wrong.
Then Emily whispered:
“Michael…”
He turned.
The hospital room door was slowly opening.
A figure stood outside.
Michael stepped in front of Emily.
“Who are you?”
The person didn’t answer.
Then a familiar voice spoke.
“I’m someone who is tired of cleaning up your father’s mistakes.”
Michael froze.
Not Daniel.
Someone else.
A woman stepped into the room.
Sophia’s face appeared in Michael’s mind.
Because the woman looked almost exactly like her.
Older.
Cold.
And carrying a photograph.
She placed it on the table.
Michael looked down.
The photo showed Daniel.
Sophia.
And one more person.
A person Michael knew.
A person he trusted.
His own mother.
Michael couldn’t breathe.
“My mother?”
The woman smiled.
“Now you understand.”
Emily looked confused.
“What is happening?”
The woman looked at Michael.
“Your family was never destroyed by one secret.”
She stepped closer.
“It was destroyed by generations of lies.”
Michael stared at the photograph.
“How long have you known?”
The woman smiled.
“Your mother knew everything.”
“No.”
“Yes.”
“She knew Daniel existed.”
“She knew Sophia existed.”
“And she helped bury the truth.”
Michael shook his head.
“That’s impossible.”
The woman leaned closer.
“Ask yourself one question.”
“What?”
“Why did your father die the night he was finally going to confess?”
The woman walked toward the door.
Michael shouted:
“Wait!”
She stopped.
“You want answers?”
She looked back.
“Then come to the place where your father died.”
“Alone.”
“Because the person you trust most…”
A cold smile.
“Is the person you should fear.”
The door closed.
Michael stood frozen.
Then his phone buzzed.
A new message.
From an unknown number.
A picture.
A picture of Mason.
May you like
Walking home from school.
Alone.
