Chapter 14 - THE CHOICE

Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
The gun stayed pointed at Emily.
Michael felt every second passing like an hour.
“Put the gun down.”
His voice was calm.
But inside, he was breaking.
His mother shook her head.
“I spent my entire life losing.”
“Your father chose another woman.”
“Then he chose you.”
“Then he chose your child.”
She looked at Emily.
“I was always second.”
Michael stared at her.
“You hurt everyone because you felt ignored?”
Her eyes filled with anger.
“You don’t understand.”
“No.”
Michael shook his head.
“I understand perfectly.”
“You wanted people to suffer because you were hurt.”
Silence.
His mother’s hand trembled.
For the first time, she looked unsure.
Daniel slowly moved forward.
“Enough.”
She looked at him.
“You don’t control anything anymore.”
She laughed.
“Neither do you.”
Daniel stopped.
“You think you’re different?”
“You destroyed Sophia.”
“You destroyed me.”
“You destroyed this family.”
Daniel looked at Michael.
And said something unexpected.
“I was wrong.”
Everyone looked at him.
Michael couldn’t believe it.
Daniel continued.
“I spent years blaming the wrong people.”
His eyes moved to Sophia.
“I hurt you.”
Sophia looked away.
“You did.”
Daniel nodded.
“I know.”
A painful silence.
“But she was the one who started it.”
He looked at Michael’s mother.
“She made all of us hate each other.”
Suddenly, the sound of sirens filled the street.
Michael’s mother looked toward the window.
Her face changed.
“How?”
Michael looked at her.
“You thought you were the only one keeping secrets?”
She stared.
“The camera.”
Michael held up his phone.
“The house security system was connected.”
“You came inside.”
“You threatened Emily.”
“Everything was recorded.”
His mother’s expression collapsed.
Police entered minutes later.
The entire truth came out.
The camera footage.
The recordings.
The documents.
The hidden accounts.
Everything.
Sophia confessed.
Not to escape blame.
But because she was tired of running.
Daniel surrendered too.
He accepted responsibility for what he had done.
But before leaving, he stopped beside Michael.
“I spent my whole life wanting your father to suffer.”
Michael looked at him.
“And now?”
Daniel looked toward Mason.
“Now I realize I became the thing I hated.”
Then he walked away.
Weeks passed.
The house became quiet again.
But quiet didn’t mean everything was fixed.
Some wounds stayed.
Emily was still healing.
The baby was growing.
And Michael was learning something important.
Trust wasn’t something you demanded.
It was something you earned.
Every day.
One evening, Michael sat outside with Mason.
“Dad?”
“Yeah?”
“Are you still mad at Aunt Sophia?”
Michael thought for a moment.
“She hurt Mom.”
Mason nodded.
“But she helped save us.”
Michael looked at his son.
“You know something?”
“What?”
“People can do bad things…”
“But they can still choose to do better.”
Mason smiled.
“Like Aunt Sophia?”
Michael nodded.
“Like Aunt Sophia.”
Then Emily called from inside.
“Michael?”
He turned.
“What?”
She smiled.
“Come here.”
He walked inside.
Emily held a small envelope.
“What is that?”
“It came today.”
Michael looked confused.
“From who?”
Emily handed it to him.
The handwriting made him freeze.
His father’s handwriting.
But that was impossible.
He opened it slowly.
Inside was one final message.
Three sentences.
Michael read them.
And his face changed.
Because the letter revealed one last truth.
A truth nobody knew.
May you like
A truth that meant…
The nightmare was never completely over.
