Chapter 12 - THE PERSON BEHIND EVERYTHING

Michael’s world stopped.
The picture.
Mason.
His son.
Walking alone.
Someone was watching him.
Someone was close enough to take that photo.
“Emily.”
His voice shook.
“We need to leave.”
She looked at him.
“What happened?”
Michael showed her the phone.
Her face went pale.
“Mason.”
He called immediately.
No answer.
Again.
No answer.
Then finally…
A voice.
“Hello?”
Michael almost collapsed from relief.
“Mason!”
“Dad?”
“Where are you?”
“I’m at school.”
Michael closed his eyes.
A wave of relief.
Then confusion.
The picture.
The person who took it.
Someone had access to him.
Michael picked up Mason from school himself.
The entire drive home, he checked the mirrors.
Someone was following them.
He could feel it.
When they arrived home, Sophia was waiting.
Michael immediately became angry.
“What are you doing here?”
Sophia looked serious.
“I know who it is.”
Michael froze.
“Who?”
“The person behind Daniel.”
Silence.
“Tell me.”
Sophia looked at Mason.
Then lowered her voice.
“Your mother.”
Michael stared.
“No.”
Sophia nodded.
“Yes.”
“You’re lying.”
“I wish I was.”
Sophia explained.
Years ago, Daniel was not the one who started everything.
He was angry.
He was manipulated.
But someone else gave him the information.
Someone else told him about the inheritance.
Someone else told him about the folder.
Michael’s mother.
“She wanted Daniel to destroy your father.”
“Why?”
Sophia looked at him.
“Because your father was going to expose her.”
Michael felt sick.
“Expose her for what?”
Sophia hesitated.
Then:
“For killing his first wife.”
The room went silent.
Michael stepped back.
“No.”
“Your father’s first wife wasn’t dead from an accident.”
Sophia’s voice became quiet.
“She was murdered.”
Michael couldn’t process it.
His mother.
The woman who raised him.
The woman who hugged him.
The woman who told him family mattered.
A murderer?
“No.”
Sophia handed him an old document.
“I found this years ago.”
Michael read it.
A police report.
An investigation.
His mother’s name.
His hands trembled.
Then the front door opened.
Everyone froze.
A voice came from the hallway.
“You should have stopped digging, Michael.”
Michael turned.
His mother stood there.
Calm.
Smiling.
Like nothing was wrong.
“Mason…”
She looked at the boy.
“Go upstairs, sweetheart.”
Michael stepped forward.
“No.”
His voice was different now.
Stronger.
“You don’t get to pretend anymore.”
His mother looked at him.
And smiled.
“I always wondered when you would finally become brave.”
Michael stared.
“You killed her.”
His mother said nothing.
That silence was the answer.
Emily held Mason close.
Sophia moved beside Michael.
For the first time…
They were on the same side.
Then Michael’s mother said something that changed everything.
“You think you found the truth?”
She laughed softly.
“You haven’t even discovered the worst part.”
Michael narrowed his eyes.
“What worst part?”
She looked directly at him.
“The child your wife is carrying…”
A pause.
“Is the reason your father really died.”
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
And Michael realized…
The biggest secret had been hidden all along.
Not in the folder.
May you like
Not in the camera.
But inside his own family.
