Chapter 1 - THE RED LIGHT

“Dad… don’t look at Mom.”

Michael froze.

His hand was still on the front door.

The sound of his seven-year-old son’s voice stopped him colder than anything else could have.

Mason was standing halfway up the staircase.

His face was pale.

His little fingers were shaking.

“Dad…”

The boy swallowed hard.

“Look at the camera above the stairs.”

For a second, nobody moved.

Not Michael.

Not Sophia.

Not even Emily, who was lying on the cold marble floor below the staircase, barely conscious and holding her pregnant stomach.

Michael slowly lifted his eyes.

Above the staircase was a small security camera.

A tiny red light blinked.

Once.

Twice.

Recording.

The room went silent.

And Sophia stopped crying.

Because she knew.

She was caught.

Ten minutes earlier…

Emily Carter had been walking down the stairs carefully.

She was almost eight months pregnant.

Every step was slow.

Every movement was careful.

One hand held the wooden railing.

The other rested under her belly, protecting the baby growing inside her.

“Careful, Emily.”

Sophia’s voice came from behind her.

Sweet.

Almost caring.

But Emily knew that tone.

She had heard it many times before.

It was the voice Sophia used when she wanted to hurt someone without looking like the villain.

“I’m fine,” Emily said.

She didn’t turn around.

She had learned something during her marriage to Michael:

The more she argued with Sophia, the worse things became.

Sophia was Michael’s younger sister.

And for years, she had mastered one skill.

Making everyone believe she was the victim.

“You know,” Sophia said quietly, walking closer.

“You really should have taken my advice.”

Emily stopped.

She closed her eyes for a moment.

Not again.

“What advice?”

Sophia smiled.

“The advice to leave before Michael came home.”

Emily slowly turned around.

“Sophia, I’m not doing this today.”

“Why?”

Sophia tilted her head.

“Because you know I’m right?”

“No.”

Emily held the railing tighter.

“Because I’m tired of fighting with someone who already decided I’m the enemy.”

Sophia laughed softly.

“Poor Emily.”

“What?”

“You still think Michael chooses you.”

Emily felt her chest tighten.

“Sophia…”

“He doesn’t know the truth about you.”

Emily stared at her.

“What truth?”

For a moment, Sophia said nothing.

Then she stepped closer.

“The truth that you don’t belong here.”

Emily shook her head.

“I’m done listening.”

She turned away.

And that was the moment everything changed.

Sophia grabbed her arm.

Hard.

Emily’s eyes widened.

“Sophia, let go.”

But Sophia didn’t.

Her fingers tightened.

“You should have left when I warned you.”

Emily pulled back.

“Sophia!”

Then came the push.

A single movement.

A single second.

A single choice.

Emily lost her balance.

Her hand reached for the railing.

But she missed.

Her body hit the first step.

Then the second.

Then the third.

The sound echoed through the house.

CRASH.

CRASH.

CRASH.

Until she landed at the bottom.

Pain exploded through her body.

She immediately curled around her stomach.

“My baby…”

Her voice was barely a whisper.

“My baby…”

Sophia stood at the top of the stairs.

Watching.

No panic.

No fear.

No regret.

Just silence.

Then she heard the front door.

Michael.

He was home.

Sophia’s expression changed instantly.

The cold look disappeared.

The confidence disappeared.

She became someone else.

Someone terrified.

She ran down the stairs.

Dropped onto the floor.

Grabbed her shoulder.

And screamed.

“MICHAEL!”

The front door opened.

“What happened?”

Michael rushed inside.

Sophia pointed at Emily.

Her eyes filled with fake tears.

“She pushed me!”

Michael stopped.

“What?”

“She attacked me!”

Sophia’s voice cracked.

“I tried to defend myself and she pushed me down!”

Emily looked up in disbelief.

“No…”

Her voice trembled.

“No, Michael…”

She tried to sit up.

“She pushed me.”

Michael looked from his sister to his wife.

His face hardened.

“Emily…”

“I’m telling the truth.”

But Sophia was already crying louder.

“She hates me, Michael.”

“She has always hated me.”

“She wanted me gone.”

Emily stared at her husband.

Waiting.

Waiting for him to ask one question.

Waiting for him to say:

“Tell me what happened.”

But Michael didn’t.

He looked at Sophia’s tears.

Then he looked at Emily.

And he made his choice.

The wrong one.

“You did this?”

Emily’s eyes widened.

“Michael, no.”

“Answer me.”

“I didn’t push her.”

Sophia covered her face.

“She’s lying.”

Emily tried to stand.

“I swear to you, I didn’t—”

Michael stepped forward.

And without thinking…

He slapped her.

The sound filled the entire house.

Emily stopped moving.

Her hand slowly touched her cheek.

The pain wasn’t even the worst part.

The worst part was the look on Michael’s face.

Like he truly believed she deserved it.

“You hit me…”

Her voice broke.

“You didn’t even ask what happened.”

Michael said nothing.

Behind him…

Sophia smiled.

Just slightly.

A tiny victory smile.

But someone saw it.

Mason.

He was standing on the staircase.

Watching everything.

His mother crying.

His father angry.

His aunt smiling.

And something inside the little boy finally broke.

“Dad…”

Everyone looked up.

Mason’s eyes were full of tears.

“Look at the camera.”

Michael turned.

The red light blinked.

Recording.

Sophia stopped breathing.

Michael stared at the camera.

Then looked back at Sophia.

Her face had lost all color.

Because she knew something Michael didn’t.

The camera didn’t just record the fall.

It recorded the truth.

And maybe…

It recorded everything she had been hiding.

Michael reached for his phone.

But before he could call anyone, Mason spoke again.

His voice was quiet.

Almost afraid.

“Dad…”

Michael looked at him.

“What else?”

Mason wiped his tears.

“Aunt Sophia wasn’t supposed to be here last night.”

The room went completely still.

Sophia whispered:

“Mason…”

The boy looked at his father.

“She lied to you.”

Michael slowly turned toward his sister.

“What did he mean?”

Sophia opened her mouth.

No words came out.

Emily looked at Mason.

Confused.

Because there was something else.

Something much bigger.

Mason wasn’t just exposing Sophia’s lie.

He was about to reveal a secret that could destroy the entire family.

“She came into your office.”

Michael’s expression changed.

“Why?”

Mason looked toward Sophia.

“She was looking for the red folder.”

Sophia’s face turned white.

Emily’s eyes widened.

Because that folder was supposed to be hidden.

Nobody knew about it.

Nobody.

Except one person.

The person who had been searching for it.

Sophia.

Michael stared at his sister.

“What was in that folder?”

Sophia didn’t answer.

And that silence told him everything.

The fall on the staircase was no accident.

The argument was no accident.

Sophia didn’t come to their house to fight.

She came for something.

May you like

And now Michael had to find out what she was willing to destroy a family to get.

Before it was too late.
