Chapter 10 - THE TRUTH INSIDE THE FOLDER

Michael didn’t remember leaving the old house.

He didn’t remember driving.

He only remembered one thing.

Emily.

His wife was in danger.

His unborn child was in danger.

And the man responsible was standing somewhere in the shadows, enjoying every second.

Daniel’s words kept repeating in his mind.

“Find the folder…”

“Or lose your wife.”

Michael gripped the steering wheel until his knuckles turned white.

Beside him, Sophia sat silently.

For the first time in years, she looked small.

Broken.

Not like the confident woman who had controlled every conversation.

Not like the woman who had smiled while Emily lay on the floor.

Just a person who had finally realized how much damage she had caused.

“I’m sorry.”

Michael didn’t look at her.

“You almost killed my wife.”

“I know.”

“You lied to me.”

“I know.”

“You helped him.”

Sophia closed her eyes.

“I know.”

Michael finally looked at her.

“Then why should I believe anything you say now?”

Sophia swallowed.

“Because I’m the only person who knows where the folder is.”

Michael stopped the car.

“What?”

Sophia looked at him.

“Daniel never found the real folder.”

Michael stared.

“Then what did he take?”

“A copy.”

Michael felt a wave of anger.

“You knew?”

“I suspected.”

“And you said nothing?”

Sophia looked away.

“Because the real folder was hidden somewhere only your father trusted.”

Michael remembered.

His father’s words.

Some secrets are better left buried.

“Where?”

Sophia whispered:

“In the house where he died.”

They returned to the old family home.

Every room carried memories.

Birthdays.

Holidays.

Family dinners.

A life that looked perfect from the outside.

But underneath…

It was built on lies.

Sophia walked to the fireplace.

“Your father always said the truth should be protected by something people overlook.”

Michael frowned.

“What does that mean?”

She touched the old wooden frame.

“He believed people search for expensive things.”

“But they ignore ordinary things.”

Sophia removed an old clock from the wall.

Behind it was a hidden compartment.

Inside was a small black folder.

Michael’s heart stopped.

The real folder.

The one everyone had been fighting over.

His hands shook as he opened it.

Inside were documents.

Bank records.

Letters.

And one final document.

A will.

Michael read the first page.

Then stopped.

His face changed.

“What?”

Sophia asked.

Michael couldn’t answer.

Because the will didn’t mention him.

It didn’t mention Sophia.

It didn’t mention Daniel.

It mentioned Emily.

And their baby.

The inheritance.

The company.

The family estate.

Everything.

His father had left it all to his unborn grandchild.

Sophia looked shocked.

“Daniel was right.”

Michael looked at her.

“What?”

“He wasn’t trying to steal your money.”

Michael frowned.

“Then what was he trying to do?”

Sophia stared at the papers.

“He wanted revenge.”

A letter fell from the folder.

Michael picked it up.

It was addressed to him.

“My son Michael…”

He started reading.

“If you are holding this letter, then the past has finally caught up with our family.”

Michael’s throat tightened.

“I failed Daniel.”

“I failed Sophia.”

“And I failed you.”

The words hurt.

Because his father was admitting everything.

“He was my son.”

Michael froze.

Daniel’s truth.

Written by his father.

“I abandoned him because I was afraid of what people would say.”

“I chose reputation over my own child.”

Michael lowered the letter.

For years, he believed his father was a good man.

Now he realized…

He was just a man who hid his mistakes well.

Then the final line caught his attention.

“If Daniel returns…”

Michael continued reading.

“Do not fight his anger with anger.”

“Fight it with the truth.”

A second page was attached.

One sentence.

A warning.

“The person who helped Daniel is still inside the family.”

Michael’s eyes widened.

Inside the family.

Someone else.

Suddenly Sophia’s phone rang.

She looked at the screen.

Her face changed.

“What?”

Michael looked at her.

“Who is it?”

Sophia slowly turned the phone around.

A message.

One sentence.

“YOU FOUND THE FOLDER TOO LATE.”

Michael felt a chill.

Because the message wasn’t from Daniel.

May you like

It was from someone else.

Someone who knew where they were.
