Chapter 8 - THE PERSON INSIDE THE HOUSE

Margaret felt like the air had disappeared.
“My apartment?”
Detective Mason nodded.
“The access point was registered to your Wi-Fi network.”
“That’s impossible.”
“Are you sure?”
Margaret looked offended.
“Yes.”
Then she stopped.
Because suddenly she remembered something.
Someone had been inside.
Not breaking in.
Not forcing the door.
Someone who knew where everything was.
Someone who had a key.
Emily looked at her.
“Who has your key?”
Margaret didn’t answer.
Because she already knew.
Olivia.
Daniel’s sister.
The woman who comforted them.
The woman who cried with them.
The woman who said she wanted justice.
Margaret stood up.
“We need to find her.”
But Olivia found them first.
She walked into the police station.
Her face was tired.
Her eyes were red.
“Margaret.”
Nobody moved.
Detective Mason stepped forward.
“Ms. Carter, we need to ask you some questions.”
Olivia looked confused.
“About what?”
Margaret stared at her.
“About the key you have to my apartment.”
The color disappeared from Olivia’s face.
For a moment...
Nobody spoke.
Then Olivia whispered:
“Daniel gave it to me.”
Margaret’s eyes narrowed.
“When?”
“Before he died.”
“Why?”
Olivia looked toward Emily.
And that hesitation said everything.
Margaret stepped closer.
“Why did Daniel give you access to my home?”
Olivia’s eyes filled with tears.
“Because he trusted me.”
Margaret laughed bitterly.
“Trusted you?”
She held up Daniel’s note.
“He wrote that the person we trusted destroyed his family.”
Olivia looked at the paper.
And her expression changed.
Not anger.
Not surprise.
Fear.
“You found it.”
Everyone noticed.
Margaret’s voice became colder.
“You knew about this note.”
Olivia looked away.
“I knew Daniel wrote something.”
“What did he tell you?”
Olivia remained silent.
Detective Mason stepped forward.
“You need to answer.”
Finally, Olivia broke.
“He was going to expose everything.”
“What everything?”
Olivia looked at Emily.
“Your father discovered the truth about your mother.”
Emily stepped closer.
“My mom is alive?”
Olivia’s silence was the answer.
The little girl covered her mouth.
Margaret felt her heart break.
After all these years...
Emily had been living with a lie.
Olivia whispered:
“Daniel found proof that she never abandoned you.”
“Then where is she?”
Olivia looked terrified.
“I don't know.”
Margaret stared.
“You’re lying.”
“No.”
Olivia shook her head.
“I know who took her.”
Everyone froze.
“Who?”
Olivia looked toward the station entrance.
May you like
And whispered:
“The same person who killed Daniel.”
