Chapter 13 - THE FINAL CONFESSION

The room was completely silent.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Everyone stared at the screen waiting for the final video to begin.

Margaret held Emily’s hand tightly.

She could feel the little girl trembling.

“Are you ready?” Detective Mason asked softly.

Emily looked at the screen.

“I need to know the truth.”

The video started.

Daniel appeared again.

His face looked tired.

His eyes carried the weight of someone who had spent too long fighting alone.

“If you are watching this, then you already know something went wrong.”

He paused.

“I spent years trying to protect my family. I thought money, power, and influence were the biggest dangers.”

Daniel looked down.

“I was wrong.”

The screen showed several documents.

Company records.

Private messages.

Financial transfers.

Then a picture appeared.

A woman.

Margaret froze.

She knew that face.

Everyone knew that face.

It was Victoria Lane.

The woman who had hired Margaret.

The woman who had supported the family after Daniel’s death.

The woman who had stood beside Emily at the funeral.

The woman everyone trusted.

Detective Mason whispered:

“So she was involved.”

Daniel’s voice continued.

“Victoria was not always my enemy.”

Margaret looked confused.

“She was my closest friend.”

The room went quiet.

“She helped me build my company. She helped me survive after my wife disappeared.”

Daniel took a deep breath.

“But years later, I discovered she had been hiding something.”

The video showed another document.

A list of payments.

Thousands of transactions.

Money moved through fake accounts.

Daniel continued:

“Victoria wasn’t stealing from me.”

A pause.

“She was protecting someone.”

Margaret leaned closer.

“Who?”

Daniel looked directly into the camera.

“The person who ordered everything.”

Another file appeared.

A name.

Robert Hayes.

Everyone looked shocked.

Margaret shook her head.

“But Robert said Victoria was behind it.”

Detective Mason stared at the screen.

“Someone is lying.”

Daniel’s voice continued.

“Robert was not the mastermind.”

The next image appeared.

A photograph.

Victoria.

Robert.

And another person.

Someone Margaret had never expected.

Someone who had been missing for years.

Emily’s mother.

Sarah Carter.

Emily gasped.

“My mom…”

Daniel spoke quietly.

“Sarah did not disappear because she was taken.”

Margaret’s heart stopped.

“She disappeared because she made a choice.”

The video ended.

Nobody moved.

Then Emily whispered:

“No…”

Margaret looked at her.

“What is it?”

Emily pointed at the screen.

“That picture.”

“What about it?”

Emily’s face turned pale.

“That’s not my mom from before.”

Everyone looked closer.

Detective Mason zoomed in.

The photo was recent.

Very recent.

Sarah Carter wasn’t just alive.

She had been working with them.

The person they had been searching for...

Had been hiding in plain sight.

Suddenly, Margaret’s phone rang.

Unknown number.

She answered.

A woman spoke.

“Margaret.”

Her blood ran cold.

It was Sarah.

“I know you found the video.”

Margaret looked at Emily.

“Where are you?”

A long pause.

Then Sarah whispered:

“Somewhere your daughter will never have to be afraid again.”

Margaret’s voice hardened.

“You abandoned her.”

Sarah went silent.

Then she said:

“No.”

A tear rolled down Margaret’s face.

“Then why didn’t you come back?”

Sarah answered:

“Because if I came back…”

A pause.

May you like

“They would have killed her.”

The call ended.
