Chapter 6 - THE TRUTH BEHIND DANIEL'S LAST MESSAGE

Margaret stared at Robert.

The words didn't make sense.

"Me?"

Robert nodded slowly.

"Daniel spent months investigating everyone around him."

He held up the document.

"And eventually, he found the connection."

Margaret grabbed the paper.

Her eyes moved across the page.

It was a financial transfer.

Her name appeared.

A large amount of money.

A payment she had never seen.

A payment she never received.

"This is fake."

Robert smiled.

"That is exactly what Daniel said at first."

Margaret looked up.

"What are you talking about?"

Robert walked around the room.

"Daniel believed someone was framing you. But then he started asking questions."

"About what?"

"About your past."

Margaret felt her chest tighten.

"My past has nothing to do with Daniel's death."

"Maybe."

Robert paused.

"Or maybe you don't remember everything."

Those words hit harder than she expected.

Because there was one thing Margaret had never told anyone.

Years ago, before working for Daniel...

She had changed her name.

She had left another city.

She had tried to disappear.

Not because she was guilty.

Because she was running from a mistake.

A mistake she thought was buried forever.

Robert noticed her silence.

"Daniel found out."

Margaret whispered:

"What did he find?"

Robert leaned closer.

"The truth about who you really are."

Suddenly, Emily's voice came from the hallway.

"Stop lying!"

Both adults turned.

Emily stood there.

Tears running down her face.

"You lied to Daddy too."

Robert's expression changed.

"Emily..."

"No!"

Her voice shook.

"You made Daddy scared."

Robert stepped toward her.

Margaret immediately moved between them.

"Don't come near her."

For the first time, Robert looked nervous.

Because he knew something.

Emily knew more than anyone expected.

The police arrived moments later.

Robert was gone.

But before leaving, he had dropped the folder.

Inside was one final document.

A handwritten note from Daniel.

Margaret unfolded it.

Only one sentence was written:

"MARGARET, IF YOU ARE READING THIS, IT MEANS THEY FOUND OUT WHO YOU REALLY ARE."

Her hands started shaking.

At the bottom of the page was another sentence.

One that changed everything.

"THE PERSON YOU TRUST THE MOST IS THE ONE WHO DESTROYED OUR FAMILY."

Margaret looked at Emily.

Emily looked back.

And both of them realized the same thing.

They had been searching for the wrong enemy.

May you like

Because the person who betrayed Daniel...

Was still standing close enough to hear every secret.
