Chapter 1 - THE LITTLE GIRL WHO WALKED INTO COURT

The courtroom was already prepared to hear a guilty verdict.

Everyone had a story.

Everyone had an opinion.

And almost everyone had already decided who they wanted to blame.

Margaret Collins sat at the defense table with her hands shaking, staring at the floor as whispers moved around the room.

"The nanny did it."

"She was the last person seen with him."

"She had access to the house."

Those words had followed her for three weeks.

Three weeks of headlines.

Three weeks of strangers judging her.

Three weeks of hearing people say she deserved what was coming.

But Margaret knew one thing.

She didn't kill Daniel Carter.

She had spent six years taking care of his daughter.

Six years making breakfast, helping with homework, wiping away tears after nightmares.

She loved that little girl like she was her own.

And now everyone believed Margaret had taken her father away.

The prosecutor stood and looked toward the jury.

"The evidence will show that Margaret Collins was the last person alone with Mr. Carter before his death."

Margaret closed her eyes.

That sentence had destroyed her life.

Because it sounded believable.

That was the dangerous part.

A lie didn't need to be perfect.

It only needed to sound possible.

The courtroom doors suddenly opened.

Everyone turned.

A little girl stood there.

Eight years old.

Barefoot.

Her pink pajamas were soaked through from the rain outside.

Her blonde hair was messy, stuck against her face.

In her small hand was a tiny pink recorder.

The entire room froze.

"Emily?"

Margaret whispered.

The little girl looked toward the defense table.

Her eyes were full of fear.

But she wasn't crying.

She was holding herself together.

A police officer tried to step forward.

"Sweetheart, you can't be here alone."

Emily shook her head.

"I need to talk."

The judge looked confused.

"Who brought you here?"

Emily looked down.

"My daddy."

A silence fell over the courtroom.

The judge leaned forward.

"Emily, your father is..."

"I know."

Her voice cracked.

"I know Daddy is gone."

A few people looked away.

Even the prosecutor softened for a second.

But then Emily raised the recorder.

"He wanted someone to hear this."

The judge stared at the small device.

"What is that?"

Emily swallowed.

"My daddy's voice."

Margaret's heart stopped.

Daniel.

His voice.

The man she had watched die.

The man everyone said would never speak again.

The judge looked at the attorneys.

"Bring the child forward."

Emily slowly walked down the aisle.

Every step echoed.

She climbed onto the chair beside the witness stand.

The judge spoke gently.

"Emily, did someone tell you what to say?"

She shook her head.

"No."

"Did anyone force you to bring this recorder?"

"No."

"Then why did you come here?"

Emily looked toward Margaret.

Then toward the empty seat where her father used to sit.

And she whispered:

"Because nobody listened to Daddy."

The room became completely silent.

The judge nodded.

"Play the recording."

Emily pressed the button.

Static filled the courtroom.

Then...

A man's voice.

Everyone recognized it immediately.

Daniel Carter.

"Margaret..."

Margaret covered her mouth.

Her eyes filled with tears.

Daniel's voice continued.

"We need to talk about what you did."

Gasps spread across the room.

Margaret looked terrified.

"No..."

She whispered.

"That's not what it sounds like."

The prosecutor immediately stood.

"Your Honor, this recording proves our point."

But Emily shook her head.

"No."

Everyone looked at her.

The little girl stared directly at the prosecutor.

"Daddy wasn't talking to Margaret because she hurt him."

She squeezed the recorder.

"He was trying to warn her."

The recording continued.

Daniel's voice became quieter.

"Margaret, if something happens to me..."

A loud crack of static interrupted.

Everyone leaned forward.

Then another voice appeared.

A voice nobody expected.

A voice that made one person in the courtroom suddenly turn pale.

"If anyone asks..."

The voice said.

"The nanny was the last one with him."

Margaret slowly looked up.

Her eyes moved toward the attorney sitting only a few feet away.

Robert Hayes.

Daniel's personal attorney.

The man who had been representing the family.

The man who claimed he was searching for justice.

The recording continued.

"We make sure everyone believes Margaret did it."

The courtroom exploded.

People started whispering.

The judge slammed the gavel.

"Order!"

Robert Hayes sat completely still.

But his face had changed.

For the first time...

He looked afraid.

Emily looked at the judge.

"I told you."

Her voice trembled.

"Daddy was telling the truth."

And at that moment, everyone realized something terrifying.

The wrong person had been on trial.

But the real question was...

How long had the truth been buried?
