Chapter 10 - THE WOMAN BEHIND THE SILENCE

Margaret didn’t sleep.
Not after the phone call.
Not after hearing that voice.
A mother’s voice.
A voice that belonged to the woman Emily had spent years believing was gone forever.
But the message wasn’t what Margaret expected.
There was no apology.
No explanation.
Only a warning.
Stop looking.
Detective Mason placed the phone records on the table.
“The call was routed through several locations.”
Margaret stared at him.
“Can you trace it?”
“Not yet.”
Emily sat in the corner of the room, quietly drawing.
Margaret walked over.
“What are you drawing?”
Emily turned the paper around.
It was a picture of a family.
A father.
A mother.
A little girl.
But there was something strange.
The mother’s face was crossed out.
Margaret’s heart sank.
“Emily…”
The little girl looked down.
“I remember something.”
“What?”
“My mom didn’t leave.”
Margaret sat beside her.
“What do you remember?”
Emily squeezed her pencil.
“The night she disappeared.”
Everyone became silent.
Detective Mason moved closer.
“Tell us everything you can.”
Emily took a deep breath.
“I woke up because I heard my parents arguing.”
Margaret listened carefully.
“What were they saying?”
Emily closed her eyes.
“Daddy said, ‘You can’t protect them anymore.’”
“Who?”
“I don’t know.”
“And your mom?”
Emily swallowed.
“She said, ‘If they find out I know, they’ll come after Emily.’”
Margaret felt a chill.
The same fear.
The same pattern.
Someone had been controlling their family for years.
Detective Mason looked at Margaret.
“Your daughter’s memory just confirmed something.”
“What?”
“Daniel wasn’t investigating one crime.”
“He was investigating a network.”
That afternoon, the police searched an abandoned property connected to Daniel’s company.
Inside, they found something hidden behind a wall.
A small metal box.
Inside:
Old photographs.
Documents.
And a letter.
The letter was written by Daniel.
Margaret opened it carefully.
Her hands trembled.
“If you found this, then I failed to protect everyone.”
She continued reading.
“I spent years believing the enemy was outside my family.”
A pause.
“Then I realized the truth.”
Margaret’s eyes moved to the next sentence.
“The person controlling everything was someone I trusted completely.”
Everyone looked at each other.
Detective Mason whispered:
“Who?”
Margaret turned the page.
The final line was there.
One name.
The name Daniel had been afraid to write anywhere else.
Margaret’s face went pale.
Because the person he suspected…
Was not Olivia.
Was not Robert.
It was someone nobody had questioned.
Someone who had been helping the investigation from the beginning.
Detective Mason looked at her.
“What does it say?”
Margaret slowly lifted her eyes.
“It says…”
May you like
She could barely speak.
“Robert Hayes was only a piece of the plan.”
