Chapter 12 - THE LAST THING DANIEL LEFT BEHIND

The photo changed everything.

Margaret’s heart nearly stopped.

Emily was in the picture.

But it wasn’t a recent photo.

It was taken years ago.

The night Daniel’s wife disappeared.

Detective Mason zoomed in.

“Look at the background.”

Everyone moved closer.

Behind Emily…

Was the same symbol.

The circle with the line through it.

The mark connected to every secret.

Margaret whispered:

“What is that?”

Robert looked terrified.

“That’s not a company symbol.”

“What is it?”

“A warning.”

Margaret looked at him.

“From who?”

Robert didn’t answer.

Because he was afraid.

That was the first time Margaret saw fear in Robert Hayes.

Not guilt.

Not panic.

Real fear.

Later that night, Margaret returned to Daniel’s house with police protection.

She needed answers.

She walked into his office.

The room looked untouched.

His desk.

His books.

His chair.

Everything exactly the same.

Except one thing.

A small envelope sitting in the center.

Her name was written on it.

MARGARET.

She opened it.

Inside was a letter.

Daniel’s handwriting.

“Margaret,

If you are reading this, then I failed to keep you away from this nightmare.”

Her eyes filled.

“I need you to know something. I never believed you were guilty.”

She stopped.

A tear fell onto the paper.

“I knew someone would try to use you because you were the easiest person to blame.”

She continued.

“But I chose you for another reason.”

Margaret frowned.

“Why?”

The next sentence answered.

“Because you are the only person Emily trusts besides me.”

Margaret covered her mouth.

Daniel had known.

He had planned for this.

The letter continued.

“There is one final piece of evidence. I hid it somewhere only Emily would know.”

Margaret looked around.

Only Emily would know.

Then she remembered.

The drawing.

The family picture.

The crossed-out face.

Emily always drew the same place.

The old tree behind the house.

Margaret ran outside.

The police followed.

Near the tree was a small metal container buried underground.

Inside was a flash drive.

Detective Mason connected it.

A video appeared.

Daniel sat in front of the camera.

He looked tired.

But calm.

“If you are watching this, then I am gone.”

Margaret felt her heart break.

Daniel looked directly into the camera.

“I need everyone to understand something.”

He paused.

“The person who destroyed my family is not someone who hates me.”

A deep silence filled the room.

“It is someone who knows exactly how much I love them.”

The video stopped.

Everyone waited.

Then another file opened automatically.

A name appeared.

THE FINAL CONFESSION.

Margaret stared at the screen.

May you like

Because the next truth...

Would reveal the person who had been controlling everything from the beginning.
