Chapter 14 - THE LAST TRUTH

For years, Emily believed her mother left because she didn’t love her.

Now she had to face something much harder.

Her mother had left because she was afraid.

But fear didn’t erase pain.

And it didn’t erase the empty years.

Margaret found Sarah’s location through the phone signal.

She wanted to go alone.

Detective Mason refused.

“You don’t know what you’re walking into.”

Margaret looked at him.

“I know exactly what I’m walking into.”

She looked at Emily.

“A daughter who deserves answers.”

They arrived at an old farmhouse outside the city.

The place looked abandoned.

But Margaret knew someone was inside.

She opened the door.

“Sarah?”

A woman stepped out.

Older than the pictures.

Tired.

Broken.

But alive.

Emily froze.

For a moment, nobody moved.

Then Sarah whispered:

“Emily.”

The little girl stared.

“You’re real.”

Sarah covered her mouth.

“I’m sorry.”

Emily’s eyes filled.

“You left me.”

Sarah cried.

“I know.”

“Daddy said you didn’t.”

Sarah looked down.

“Your father protected me.”

Margaret stepped forward.

“Explain everything.”

Sarah took a deep breath.

“Victoria discovered our company was being used for illegal deals.”

Margaret frowned.

“But you said Victoria was helping.”

“She was.”

Sarah nodded.

“At first.”

She explained everything.

Victoria had discovered the truth.

She wanted to expose the people involved.

But someone threatened her family.

So she made a deal.

She helped cover it up.

And Daniel found out.

“He recorded everything,” Sarah said.

“Then why did he die?”

Sarah looked away.

“Because he trusted the wrong person.”

Margaret waited.

Sarah whispered:

“Robert.”

Everyone became silent.

“But Daniel’s video said Robert wasn’t the mastermind.”

Sarah nodded.

“He wasn’t.”

“Then who?”

Sarah looked directly at Margaret.

“The person who controlled Robert.”

A horrible realization crossed Margaret’s face.

“Victoria.”

Sarah nodded.

“She was trying to protect herself.”

Detective Mason stepped forward.

“Then why did she help Margaret?”

Sarah answered:

“Because Daniel planned for that.”

“What?”

“Daniel knew Victoria would try to control the story after his death.”

Sarah pulled out a small envelope.

“Before he died, Daniel gave this to me.”

Margaret opened it.

Inside was one final message.

“IF VICTORIA EVER PRETENDS TO SAVE YOU, REMEMBER THIS…”

She continued reading.

“SHE IS ONLY CLEANING UP THE DAMAGE SHE CREATED.”

Margaret closed her eyes.

Everything finally made sense.

The fake evidence.

The accusations.

The missing files.

The lies.

Victoria had not just wanted Daniel silent.

She wanted the entire truth buried.

Then Detective Mason’s phone rang.

He answered.

His face changed.

“What happened?”

He looked at Margaret.

“Victoria is gone.”

A pause.

“She left the city.”

Margaret looked outside.

Rain began falling.

“She knows we found out.”

Then another message arrived.

From Victoria.
