Chapter 9 - THE MOTHER WHO CAME BACK FROM THE DEAD

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

The woman standing at the ballroom entrance looked around at all the faces staring at her.

Six years.

She had waited six years for this moment.

Leandro couldn’t breathe.

“Mariana?”

The woman’s eyes filled with tears.

“Yes.”

His voice shook.

“You’re alive.”

Mariana nodded.

“But I was never free.”

The room became completely silent.

Inés stepped forward.

“Who kept you away?”

Mariana looked directly at Bárbara.

And everyone understood.

Bárbara took a step back.

“This is insane.”

“No.”

Mariana’s voice was quiet.

“That’s what you wanted everyone to believe.”

Leandro looked between them.

“Tell me the truth.”

Mariana closed her eyes.

“Six years ago, I discovered that Bárbara had changed the inheritance documents.”

Bárbara laughed.

“Proof?”

Mariana looked at Elena.

Her sister handed Inés a small recording device.

“My sister knew she needed evidence.”

Inés pressed play.

A voice filled the room.

Bárbara’s voice.

“You don’t understand, Mariana. If that baby survives, everything changes.”

A second voice answered.

“What are you going to do?”

Bárbara replied:

“Make sure nobody ever finds out.”

The recording ended.

Nobody looked at Bárbara the same way again.

Leandro looked devastated.

“You tried to destroy my child.”

Bárbara’s eyes became cold.

“You were never going to choose me.”

“What?”

“I spent my whole life protecting this family.”

She stepped forward.

“And what did I get?”

Nobody answered.

“Nothing.”

Her voice became bitter.

“Then Jimena came along. Then the baby. Suddenly everyone had a place except me.”

Leandro shook his head.

“So you ruined everyone’s lives?”

Bárbara said nothing.

Because she knew she had lost.

But then Mariana spoke again.

“There is one more thing.”

Everyone turned.

“What?”

Mariana looked at Noa.

The little girl standing beside Inés.

“The child in the photograph…”

She paused.

“She wasn’t the only baby involved.”

Inés felt her stomach tighten.

“What are you saying?”

Mariana looked at her.

“The night the baby disappeared…”

She swallowed.

“Another child was taken too.”

Everyone froze.

Leandro stared.

“Another child?”

Mariana nodded.

“And that child has been living under a different name for six years.”

The room went silent.

Noa looked confused.

“Who?”

Mariana looked at the little girl.

And whispered:

“The child who discovered the truth.”

Inés felt her heart stop.

Because suddenly the mystery wasn’t only about Leandro’s missing heir.

May you like

It was about her own daughter.
