Chapter 13 - THE TRUTH THAT WAS BURIED FOR SIX YEARS

The photograph trembled in Inés’s hands.
It was impossible.
Seven years ago, she had believed she was saving an abandoned child.
She believed she was giving a baby a home.
A family.
A future.
But now someone was telling her that the greatest decision of her life had been part of a carefully planned secret.
Leandro looked at the photograph.
“Where did you get this?”
The security guard shook his head.
“It was left outside the office door.”
Inés turned the picture over again.
The message was still there.
You never knew whose child you saved.
Noa looked up at her mother.
“Mom…”
Inés immediately hid the photograph.
“You don’t need to worry.”
But Noa was smarter than most adults realized.
She knew when her mother was scared.
“You’re scared.”
Those two words broke something inside Inés.
Because for years, she had always been the person protecting others.
The person who stayed calm during emergencies.
The person who found answers.
But tonight, someone had turned her own life into a mystery.
Mariana stepped closer.
“There is something you need to know.”
Everyone looked at her.
“What?”
Mariana took a deep breath.
“When my baby disappeared, I searched everywhere.”
She looked at Noa.
“And then I found a record.”
“What record?”
“A private adoption file.”
Inés felt her stomach tighten.
“No.”
Mariana nodded.
“Yes.”
Leandro looked confused.
“But if Noa was your child…”
Mariana shook her head.
“I don’t know.”
The room became silent.
Because that was the first time anyone admitted the truth.
Nobody knew who Noa really was.
Not completely.
Mariana continued.
“The records were changed. Names were removed. Dates were altered.”
She looked at Bárbara.
“But someone knew.”
Everyone turned.
Bárbara stood silently.
For the first time, she looked exhausted.
Not powerful.
Not arrogant.
Just broken.
Leandro stepped toward her.
“Tell us.”
Bárbara looked at him.
“You want the truth?”
“Yes.”
She laughed softly.
“The truth is nobody in this family was innocent.”
The room froze.
“Your father knew about the baby.”
Leandro’s face changed.
“My father?”
“Yes.”
Bárbara looked at him.
“He knew there was a child who could inherit everything.”
“And?”
“And he was afraid.”
“Afraid of what?”
“That the family empire would be destroyed by a child nobody could control.”
Leandro shook his head.
“My father would never do that.”
Bárbara looked away.
“You never knew him the way I did.”
Before anyone could ask another question, the hotel alarm sounded.
A guard rushed in.
“Ms. Valcárcel!”
“What happened?”
“We found someone in the underground parking area.”
“Who?”
The guard hesitated.
“A woman.”
Inés looked at Mariana.
“Who?”
The guard answered:
“She said her name was Clara Montalbán.”
Everyone froze.
Leandro whispered:
“My mother.”
But that was impossible.
May you like
Because Leandro’s mother had died ten years earlier.
To be continued…
