Chapter 3 - THE FAMILY MEMBER WHO BETRAYED SOPHIE
Lucas couldn’t move.
The church blurred around him.
Daniel Whitmore stood near the back of the room.
The moment their eyes met, Daniel looked away.
That was enough.
Lucas knew.
“You knew about this?”
Daniel didn’t answer.
Lucas slowly walked toward him.
“Did you know?”
Daniel sighed.
“Lucas, listen.”
“No.”
Lucas held up the papers.
“My daughter’s name is on legal documents to remove her from my home.”
Daniel lowered his voice.
“It wasn’t supposed to happen like this.”
A painful silence followed.
Sophie looked confused.
“Uncle Daniel?”
Daniel looked at her.
For a second, guilt appeared on his face.
Then it disappeared.
Lucas noticed.
And that hurt more than anything.
“You helped her.”
Daniel shook his head.
“I was trying to protect you.”
Lucas laughed bitterly.
“Protect me from my own child?”
Vanessa stepped closer.
“Lucas, you don’t understand.”
“No.”
Lucas looked at her.
“I understand everything.”
Vanessa’s expression hardened.
The sweet bride disappeared.
“You think you can raise a child alone forever?”
Lucas stared at her.
“You were supposed to become her family.”
Vanessa looked at Sophie.
“She was never going to accept me.”
Sophie’s eyes filled with tears.
Lucas stepped between them.
“She’s six years old.”
“And she controls your entire life.”
The room exploded with whispers.
Lucas realized something.
