Chapter 2 - THE PAPERS SHE HID UNDER HER WEDDING DRESS

The church remained silent.

Lucas slowly opened the envelope.

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Lucas, don’t.”

That single sentence made everyone look at her.

Lucas stared at the papers.

“Don’t?”

His voice became colder.

“Why shouldn’t I read documents with my daughter’s name on them?”

Vanessa’s face changed.

“I can explain.”

“You had weeks to explain.”

Lucas turned the first page.

His eyes moved across the document.

Then his expression changed.

The papers were not about custody.

Not exactly.

They were prepared instructions.

Instructions for removing Sophie from the home after the wedding.

Lucas felt his stomach tighten.

“What is this?”

Vanessa stayed quiet.

“Answer me.”

“It was only temporary.”

Lucas looked up.

“Temporary?”

“You wanted us to start our marriage without distractions.”

Everyone gasped.

Lucas stared at her.

“My daughter is a distraction?”

Vanessa immediately shook her head.

“No, that’s not what I meant.”

Sophie held onto Lucas’s jacket.

“Daddy…”

Lucas looked at his daughter.

Then back at Vanessa.

The woman he almost married.

The woman who promised she would protect Sophie.

The woman who now stood exposed in front of everyone.

He continued reading.

The final page was different.

It contained an address.

And a signature.

Lucas recognized the name instantly.

His face went pale.

Because the person who approved Sophie’s removal was not Vanessa.

It was someone from his own family.

May you like

His own brother.

Daniel.
