Chapter 9 - THE NIGHT EVERYTHING CHANGED

I donât remember running upstairs.
I donât remember opening doors.
I only remember one thing.
My daughter was gone.
âIsabella!â
Nothing.
I searched every room.
The bedroom.
The bathroom.
The guest rooms.
Nothing.
Then I found her stuffed rabbit on the floor.
The one she carried everywhere.
My hands started shaking.
Because children donât leave their favorite things behind.
Unless they are scared.
My phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered immediately.
âWhere is my daughter?â
Silence.
Then a voice.
Beatriz.
âSheâs safe.â
My entire body went cold.
âWhere is she?â
âYou need to listen to me.â
âNo.â
My voice became hard.
âYou listen to me.â
A pause.
âIf anything happens to IsabellaâŠâ
âYou wonât hurt me.â
Her voice sounded different.
Not confident.
Desperate.
âYou think you know everything.â
âI know enough.â
âNo.â
She whispered.
âYou donât.â
The line went quiet.
Then she said:
âCome alone.â
My grip tightened.
âWhere?â
âThe old villa near the coast.â
The abandoned property.
A place we owned but rarely used.
My mind started racing.
âWhy?â
âBecause we need to talk.â
âNo.â
I looked around the empty house.
âYou need to explain.â
She hung up.
I called Marcus immediately.
âShe has Isabella.â
There was no hesitation.
âIâm coming.â
âNo.â
âSirââ
âI need you to do something else.â
âWhat?â
âTrack the phone.â
A pause.
Then:
âAlready doing it.â
I grabbed my keys.
For the first time in my life, I felt completely powerless.
Not because someone threatened my company.
Not because someone tried to steal my money.
Because my daughter was somewhere scared.
Waiting for me.
The drive to the old villa felt endless.
Every second felt like an hour.
When I arrived, the lights were off.
The house looked abandoned.
I stepped inside.
âBeatriz!â
My voice echoed.
Then I heard something.
A small voice.
âDad?â
My heart almost stopped.
âIsabella?â
I followed the sound.
And there she was.
Sitting in a chair.
Safe.
But terrified.
I rushed toward her.
âAre you okay?â
She nodded.
But she was crying.
âIâm sorry.â
I held her.
âYou have nothing to be sorry for.â
Then I looked up.
Beatriz was standing across the room.
And she wasnât alone.
A man stood beside her.
Adrian.
The person behind everything.
He smiled.
âYou really thought you could win?â
I stepped in front of Isabella.
âYou made a mistake.â
Adrian laughed.
âAnd what mistake was that?â
I looked at my daughter.
Then back at him.
âYou forgot one thing.â
âWhat?â
I moved closer.
âIâm not fighting for money.â
The smile disappeared from his face.
âIâm fighting for my daughter.â
Then the lights suddenly turned on.
And behind AdrianâŠ
Were police officers.
Marcus had followed the signal.
Adrianâs face changed.
But the biggest surprise came next.
One officer walked forward.
âMr. Alvarez.â
âYes?â
âWe need to talk to you about another piece of evidence.â
I frowned.
âWhat evidence?â
The officer looked at Beatriz.
Then back at me.
âEvidence that suggests someone tried to harm you months ago.â
The room went silent.
I looked at Beatriz.
She looked terrified.
May you like
Because whatever they had foundâŠ
Was something even she couldnât explain.
