Chapter 2 - THE SECRET MY DAUGHTER WAS AFRAID TO TELL ME

Isabella finally reached the trash containers.

She looked exhausted.

Her hands trembled as she grabbed the first bag.

I watched her fingers slip.

The bag crashed onto the ground.

The plastic tore open.

Rotten food spilled across the stone.

Coffee grounds.

Old leftovers.

Dirty containers.

The smell filled the air.

But Isabella didn’t react to the mess.

She reacted to something else.

Fear.

Pure fear.

“No
”

Her voice was barely audible.

“No, no, no
”

She dropped to her knees.

Immediately, she started picking everything up with her bare hands.

Fast.

Desperate.

Like she wasn’t cleaning garbage.

Like she was trying to prevent something terrible from happening.

That was the moment I couldn’t stay hidden anymore.

“Isabella.”

My voice crossed the garden.

She froze.

Her hands stopped moving.

Slowly, she turned around.

Her eyes widened.

“Dad?”

The way she said it broke me.

Not with happiness.

With disbelief.

Like she wasn’t sure I was real.

I walked toward her.

“Yes, sweetheart.”

Her lips trembled.

“You’re home?”

I knelt beside her.

“I came back early.”

She stared at me.

Then her eyes moved to her dress.

Her hands.

The garbage around her.

And instead of running into my arms

She whispered:

“You shouldn’t see me like this.”

I felt my chest tighten.

“What do you mean?”

She looked down.

“I’m sorry.”

“Sorry for what?”

“I messed up.”

Those two words almost destroyed me.

My daughter believed she was the problem.

I gently took her hands.

The moment I saw the blisters, my anger returned.

“Who did this?”

Immediately, she shook her head.

“Please don’t be angry.”

“With who?”

She didn’t answer.

“Isabella.”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Please don’t fight with Beatriz.”

I stared at her.

“Why would I fight with Beatriz?”

She stayed silent.

Then she whispered:

“Because she said you would believe her.”

My heart sank.

“What else did she say?”

Isabella looked toward the terrace.

“She said I wasn’t useful.”

My jaw tightened.

“She said I needed to learn.”

“Learn what?”

“How to work.”

I closed my eyes for a moment.

Trying to control myself.

“Did she make you do this every day?”

Isabella didn’t answer.

That was answer enough.

Before I could say anything else, footsteps rushed down the stairs.

Beatriz appeared.

And instantly, she changed.

The cold expression disappeared.

The cruel voice disappeared.

She became the perfect wife.

“Oh my God!”

She smiled.

“You’re home!”

She walked toward me.

“I can’t believe you didn’t tell me.”

I didn’t move.

Her eyes quickly scanned the scene.

The garbage.

The ripped dress.

Isabella beside me.

She knew.

She knew exactly what I had seen.

“Oh
”

She laughed nervously.

“This looks bad.”

I stared at her.

“But it’s not what you think.”

I said nothing.

“She wanted to help.”

My expression didn’t change.

“She has been asking for more responsibility.”

I looked at Isabella’s injured hands.

“This is responsibility?”

Beatriz forced a smile.

“It was just a small chore.”

I stood up slowly.

“A small chore?”

Her confidence started disappearing.

“She needs discipline.”

“No.”

My voice was quiet.

But firm.

“She needs a childhood.”

The silence between us became heavy.

Beatriz looked at Isabella.

“Go upstairs and clean yourself.”

“No.”

She looked back at me.

“What?”

“She stays here.”

For the first time, I saw fear in my wife’s eyes.

Real fear.

I took Isabella’s hand.

And my daughter held onto mine.

Like she had been waiting months for someone to do exactly that.

As we walked inside, Beatriz followed.

“We need to talk.”

I opened the door.

“We will.”

“About what?”

I looked at her.

“About everything you thought I would never discover.”

Her face changed.

May you like

Because she finally understood.

The game was over.
