Chapter 7 - THE SECRETS I NEVER KNEW

For a few seconds, I couldn’t speak.

The hospital room suddenly felt smaller.

Emily was sleeping peacefully beside me, completely unaware that the foundation of my entire marriage was beginning to crack.

“Who are you?” I asked.

The woman on the phone hesitated.

“My name is Laura Bennett. I worked with Derek for four years.”

“Worked with him?”

“Yes.”

I looked at Rachel.

She immediately moved closer.

The warning in my chest grew stronger.

“What exactly are you trying to tell me?”

Laura took a deep breath.

“I know this probably sounds strange.”

“It does.”

“I’ve been trying to decide whether I should call you for months.”

Months.

That word stuck with me.

“Why?”

“Because I saw what he was doing.”

My fingers tightened around the phone.

“What was he doing?”

Another pause.

Then she said:

“Controlling everything.”

I felt a strange chill.

Because those words weren’t new.

I knew Derek controlled money.

I knew he controlled decisions.

I knew he liked things his way.

But I had convinced myself that was just his personality.

Laura continued.

“Megan, Derek has always been good at making people think he’s the victim.”

I swallowed.

“What does that mean?”

“It means he tells everyone the same story.”

“What story?”

“That he’s the responsible one. The one holding everything together. The one married to someone who is emotional and difficult.”

My heart sank.

Because I had heard those words before.

Not from strangers.

From him.

“You don’t understand,” I whispered.

Laura’s voice softened.

“Yes, I do.”

The silence between us grew.

Then she said:

“He did the same thing to someone before you.”

I froze.

“What?”

“He was engaged before he met you.”

I looked at Rachel.

She mouthed:

“Engaged?”

Laura continued.

“Her name was Ashley.”

My stomach tightened.

“What happened?”

“She left him.”

“Why?”

Laura took a breath.

“Because she found out he was controlling her finances too.”

The room went completely quiet.

I stared at Emily.

My daughter.

My reason for everything.

“How do you know this?”

“Because Ashley was my friend.”

I sat there unable to move.

All the small moments from my marriage started replaying in my head.

The comments.

The warnings.

The way Derek always made me feel lucky he stayed.

The way he convinced me nobody else would understand me.

Laura whispered:

“Megan, he doesn’t change.”

A tear rolled down my cheek.

Not because I missed him.

Because I finally understood.

I wasn’t the first woman.

I was just the next one.

“Why are you telling me this now?” I asked.

“Because when I saw what happened last night…”

Her voice cracked.

“I realized he did it again.”

I closed my eyes.

The fifteen dollars.

The empty kitchen.

The ring.

Everything.

Then Laura said something that made my entire body go cold.

“Megan, there’s something else.”

“What?”

“Derek has been preparing for the possibility that you might leave.”

My eyebrows pulled together.

“What does that mean?”

“It means he already had a plan.”

My grip tightened.

“What kind of plan?”

May you like

Laura lowered her voice.

“The kind where he makes sure you have nothing.”
