Chapter 2 - THE SECRET PLAN

Three weeks earlier, I sat on my bathroom floor crying silently.

Not because Derek had yelled.

He didn’t need to yell anymore.

That was the worst part.

He had learned that quiet cruelty worked better.

I was holding my phone, staring at my sister Rachel’s name.

My finger hovered over the call button.

I hadn’t told anyone.

Not my friends.

Not my parents.

Not even Rachel.

Because admitting the truth meant accepting something I wasn’t ready to face.

My marriage was broken.

I finally pressed call.

She answered after two rings.

“Hey, little sister. Everything okay?”

I tried to say yes.

But the word wouldn’t come out.

“Megan?”

And then I broke.

I told her everything.

I told her how Derek checked every purchase.

How he questioned every dollar.

How he made me feel like I was lucky he chose me.

I told her about the night I asked him if he was excited about becoming a father.

He looked at me and said:

“Honestly? I’m more worried about how much this is going to change my life.”

Rachel was quiet.

Too quiet.

“Say something,” I whispered.

Finally she said:

“Megan… why are you still there?”

The question hurt because I didn’t have an answer.

“I love him.”

Rachel sighed.

“No. You love who you thought he was.”

I closed my eyes.

That sentence stayed with me.

Because deep down, I knew she was right.

Derek wasn’t always like this.

Or maybe I just didn’t notice.

People rarely show you who they are all at once.

Sometimes they do it slowly.

A comment here.

A control there.

A little disrespect.

A little more.

Until one day you wake up and realize you have been disappearing.

Rachel took a breath.

“If you ever decide to leave, don’t tell him.”

“What?”

“Don’t warn him. Don’t have one last conversation. Don’t give him a chance to convince you.”

I didn’t answer.

“Megan.”

“I’m pregnant.”

“I know.”

“What if I can’t do it?”

Rachel’s voice softened.

“Then come to me.”

That night, after we hung up, I made my first real decision in years.

I started preparing.

Quietly.

I copied important documents.

Birth certificate.

Insurance papers.

Medical records.

Bank information.

I packed clothes into a bag and hid it where Derek wouldn’t look.

I saved small amounts of money whenever I could.

I created a way out.

Not because I hated him.

Because I finally loved myself enough to stop waiting.

May you like

I just never expected I would need that plan so soon.

Or that my daughter would choose the exact night to arrive.
