Chapter 5 - THE MAN WHO FINALLY NOTICED

Almost two hundred miles away, Derek walked into an empty house.

At first, he didn’t notice anything was wrong.

That was the kind of person he was.

He expected things to stay exactly where he left them.

He dropped his keys on the table.

“Why is it so dark?”

No answer.

He walked toward the kitchen.

“Megan?”

Nothing.

Then he saw it.

The hospital bag was gone.

His expression changed.

Slowly.

Confusion first.

Then irritation.

Then something else.

Fear.

He looked at the counter.

The fifteen dollars were still there.

But beside them…

was his wedding ring.

For the first time all night, Derek stopped moving.

“What the hell?”

He picked up the ring.

His ring.

The one she wore every day.

The one he never thought she would remove.

He grabbed his phone.

Called her.

No answer.

Again.

No answer.

Again.

Straight to voicemail.

His jaw tightened.

“Megan, pick up.”

Nothing.

He called the hospital.

“Hi, I’m looking for my wife.”

The receptionist checked.

“What is her name?”

“Megan Carter.”

A pause.

“I’m sorry, sir. We don’t have anyone by that name here.”

Derek frowned.

“What?”

“She isn’t a patient here.”

His stomach dropped.

“That’s impossible.”

But it wasn’t.

Because for the first time, Derek realized something terrifying.

Megan hadn’t disappeared.

She had left.

The messages started immediately.

Where are you?

Answer me.

This isn’t funny.

Stop acting crazy.

Tell me what hospital you’re at.

He stared at his phone.

Waiting.

Expecting her to respond.

Because she always did.

That was the pattern.

He would hurt her.

She would cry.

Then she would explain why he hurt her.

Then she would forgive him.

But this time was different.

Hours passed.

No response.

Derek paced through the house.

Then he noticed something else.

The closet.

A few clothes were missing.

The documents in his desk drawer were gone.

The old laptop she never used was gone.

His face changed.

She had planned this.

For how long?

The thought made him angry.

Then scared.

Because if she planned it…

that meant she wasn’t coming back.

He grabbed his phone again.

Called Rachel.

She answered after three rings.

“Hello?”

“Where is she?”

Silence.

Derek clenched his jaw.

“Rachel, where is my wife?”

Rachel’s voice was cold.

“Your wife?”

“Yes.”

“You mean the woman you left alone while she was in labor?”

Derek went quiet.

“That’s not what happened.”

Rachel laughed.

A bitter laugh.

“Of course that’s what you’re going to say.”

“I was going to come.”

“No, Derek. You were going to dinner.”

“I had responsibilities.”

“So did she.”

The line went silent.

Then Rachel said:

“You should be grateful.”

“For what?”

“That she gave you a daughter before she realized she deserved better.”

Derek’s face hardened.

“Where is she?”

Rachel lowered her voice.

“You don’t get to know everything anymore.”

Then she hung up.

Derek stared at the phone.

For the first time in years…

May you like

he felt powerless.

And he hated it.
