Chapter 3 - THE DRIVE AWAY

Rachel was waiting at the end of my street.
The moment I stepped outside, she jumped out of her car.
Then she saw my face.
Then she saw my stomach.
“Oh my God.”
Another contraction hit.
I grabbed the car door.
Rachel rushed over.
“Megan, you’re in labor.”
I nodded.
“I know.”
“Where’s Derek?”
I looked back at my house.
The place where I had spent years trying to prove I was worth loving.
“He’s having dinner.”
Rachel’s expression changed.
“What?”
“He gave me fifteen dollars for a cab.”
For a moment, she didn’t speak.
Then she whispered:
“I’m going to destroy him.”
Despite everything, I almost laughed.
Almost.
“We need to go.”
“Where?”
I opened the passenger door.
“Not Riverside.”
Rachel froze.
“That’s the closest hospital.”
“I know.”
“Then why?”
I looked at the house.
Because leaving wasn’t just about distance.
It was about finally stepping outside the life Derek built for me.
“Because I don’t want anything connected to him.”
Rachel understood.
“Okay.”
She started driving.
We left Columbus behind.
At first, neither of us talked.
The city lights disappeared.
The roads became darker.
My phone started ringing.
Derek.
One call.
Then another.
Then another.
I watched his name appear again and again.
Seventeen missed calls.
Rachel looked over.
“You’re not answering?”
“No.”
“What if he’s worried?”
I stared at the screen.
Then I laughed softly.
“Now he’s worried?”
The phone rang again.
I turned it off.
Thirty minutes later, another contraction hit.
Harder.
Stronger.
I grabbed the seat.
Rachel looked terrified.
“Megan?”
“I’m okay.”
“You don’t look okay.”
“I can do this.”
Then suddenly, I felt it.
Warm liquid.
My face changed.
Rachel saw it.
“Oh no.”
I whispered:
“My water broke.”
She gripped the steering wheel.
“Hold on.”
The car accelerated.
The highway stretched in front of us.
And for the first time in years…
I wasn’t running away from something.
I was running toward myself.
But I didn’t know yet…
that before sunrise, everything about my life would change.

And Derek would finally learn the one thing he never believed:
A woman who has nothing left to lose is the most dangerous person in the room.
