Chapter 11 - THE FILES IN HIS DESK

I couldn’t sleep that night.

Every sound made me look toward the door.

Every shadow made me wonder.

Not because I was weak.

Because for the first time, I understood something.

Fear was not always imaginary.

Sometimes fear was your mind warning you.

Rachel stayed awake too.

Around three in the morning, she found me staring at Emily.

“You should sleep.”

“I’m scared.”

She sat beside me.

“I know.”

“What if I made the wrong choice?”

Rachel looked at me.

“You mean leaving?”

I nodded.

She shook her head.

“No.”

“What?”

“The wrong choice would have been teaching your daughter that this is what love looks like.”

I looked down.

Emily moved slightly.

Tiny fingers curled.

And I knew.

Rachel was right.

The next morning, Laura met us outside the hospital.

She looked nervous.

More nervous than I expected.

She carried a brown envelope.

“What is that?”

She looked around before answering.

“Insurance.”

“Insurance?”

“Against Derek.”

My eyebrows pulled together.

“What’s inside?”

She handed it to me.

“Documents.”

I opened the envelope.

The first page was an old email.

From Derek.

My eyes moved across the screen.

And my stomach turned.

It was sent years before I met him.

The subject line:

Relationship Protection Plan

I looked at Laura.

“What is this?”

She swallowed.

“Derek kept files.”

“Files?”

“On people.”

I stared at her.

“What kind of files?”

“Personal information.”

My hands tightened around the paper.

“Why?”

“Because Derek doesn’t trust people.”

“That’s not normal.”

“No.”

Laura looked at me.

“It’s not.”

I read more.

Notes.

Dates.

Private conversations.

Information about Ashley.

Then something that made my blood run cold.

My name.

My name was written on one of the pages.

I stopped breathing.

“When was this created?”

Laura didn’t answer.

I looked up.

“When?”

She whispered:

“Before your wedding.”

The world seemed to tilt.

Before our wedding?

Before I even knew something was wrong?

I flipped the page.

There was a sentence written in Derek’s handwriting.

“Megan is easier to influence than Ashley.”

I felt sick.

Rachel took the papers from my hand.

Her face turned furious.

“He was studying you.”

No.

I didn’t want to believe it.

I wanted to believe there was some explanation.

Some misunderstanding.

But there wasn’t.

Because underneath that sentence was another one.

“If she ever leaves, use financial pressure first.”

I closed my eyes.

The fifteen dollars.

The threats.

The house.

The accounts.

Everything.

It wasn’t random.

It was a strategy.

That afternoon, I made a decision.

Not emotional.

Not angry.

A real decision.

I called an attorney.

Her name was Claire Morgan.

Rachel found her through a friend.

The first thing Claire said after hearing my story was:

“Megan, I need you to understand something.”

“What?”

“You are not dealing with a normal divorce situation.”

I swallowed.

“Because of the baby?”

“No.”

May you like

A pause.

“Because your husband appears to have planned for this.”
