Chapter 14 - THE TRUTH FINALLY COMES OUT

For the next month, I focused on one thing.

Emily.

Not Derek.

Not the court.

Not revenge.

My daughter.

Every morning, I woke up and watched her smile.

Every night, I held her while she slept.

And slowly…

I started rebuilding myself.

I found a small apartment.

I opened my own bank account.

I started making decisions without asking permission.

Simple things.

What groceries to buy.

What color curtains I liked.

Where to put Emily’s toys.

Things most people never think about.

But for me, they were freedom.

Then Laura called.

“I found something.”

Her voice sounded serious.

“What?”

“Ashley.”

I froze.

“The woman before me?”

“Yes.”

“What about her?”

“She wants to talk to you.”

My heart started beating faster.

“Why?”

“Because she thinks you deserve to know the whole truth.”

Two days later, I met Ashley at a quiet coffee shop.

I expected anger.

I expected someone broken.

Instead, I saw a woman who looked like me.

Tired.

Stronger.

Surviving.

She sat down.

“You’re Megan.”

I nodded.

“And you’re Ashley.”

She gave a small smile.

“I’m sorry.”

“For what?”

“For not warning you sooner.”

I looked at her.

“You didn’t know me.”

“No.”

She looked down.

“But I knew him.”

That sentence hurt.

Ashley told me everything.

How Derek slowly isolated her.

How he convinced her she couldn’t handle life without him.

How every argument ended with him threatening to leave.

How he made her feel lucky he stayed.

Then she said:

“The day I left, he told me I would come crawling back.”

I swallowed.

“What happened?”

“I never did.”

She looked at me.

“And that’s what he couldn’t forgive.”

Then Ashley revealed something even bigger.

“Derek didn’t just lose control with you.”

“What do you mean?”

“He has done this before.”

“With who?”

She hesitated.

“More women than you know.”

I felt sick.

“Why didn’t anyone stop him?”

“Because every woman thought she was alone.”

The words hit me.

Because that was exactly what Derek wanted.

Isolation.

Silence.

Fear.

Ashley reached into her bag.

“I brought you something.”

She handed me a small folder.

Inside were messages.

Emails.

Documents.

Proof.

“He kept records of everyone.”

I stared.

“Why?”

“Because he likes having leverage.”

My hands tightened.

Then I saw something.

A name.

Another woman.

Another story.

Another victim.

I looked at Ashley.

“How many?”

She shook her head.

“I don’t know.”

That night, I sat at my kitchen table long after Emily fell asleep.

For months, I thought I was fighting for myself.

I was wrong.

I was fighting for every woman who never found the courage to leave.

The next morning, Claire called.

“Megan, we have a problem.”

My stomach dropped.

“What happened?”

“Derek’s attorney contacted me.”

“About what?”

“He wants to withdraw the custody request.”

I frowned.

“That’s good, right?”

“No.”

Her voice was serious.

“It’s a trap.”

“What kind of trap?”

Claire paused.

“He wants you to lower your guard.”

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Why?”

“Because he’s planning something else.”

I looked toward Emily’s room.

“What?”

May you like

Claire’s answer was quiet.

“He’s asking for full custody.”
