Chapter 12 - DEREK LOSES CONTROL

Derek hated silence.

That was something I learned during our marriage.

He could handle anger.

He could handle arguments.

He could handle me crying.

But he couldn’t handle being ignored.

Because silence meant he wasn’t in control.

And for the first time…

I was silent.

He called.

I didn’t answer.

He texted.

I didn’t respond.

He emailed.

My attorney handled it.

And every day that passed, Derek became more desperate.

At his office, his coworker Laura’s disappearance from his life bothered him.

He knew something had changed.

He knew people were talking.

And he hated it.

A colleague walked into his office.

“Derek?”

He looked up.

“What?”

“You okay?”

“I’m fine.”

The coworker hesitated.

“People are asking questions.”

His face hardened.

“What questions?”

“About Megan.”

Derek leaned back.

“What about her?”

The coworker looked uncomfortable.

“About what happened.”

Derek laughed.

“There is nothing to know.”

But even he didn’t believe that anymore.

Because the story was changing.

And for the first time, he wasn’t the one controlling it.

That evening, Derek showed up at Rachel’s house.

Rachel opened the door.

And immediately regretted it.

“What are you doing here?”

“I need to talk.”

“No.”

“Megan is my wife.”

Rachel stared at him.

“Not anymore.”

His jaw tightened.

“Where is my daughter?”

“She has a name.”

“I want to see Emily.”

Rachel stepped outside and closed the door behind her.

“You don’t get to show up here demanding things.”

“I’m her father.”

“You remembered that now?”

His face changed.

“Megan is turning everyone against me.”

Rachel almost smiled.

“No.”

“What?”

“She finally stopped protecting you.”

Derek stepped closer.

“Tell me where she is.”

“No.”

His voice dropped.

“You don’t understand what you’re doing.”

Rachel looked him directly in the eyes.

“No, Derek.”

She paused.

“You don’t understand what she’s doing.”

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

Then Derek smiled.

A cold smile.

The same smile I had seen many times.

The one that meant he was done asking.

“Fine.”

Rachel felt a chill.

“Fine?”

He nodded.

“If she wants a fight…”

He looked toward the house.

“She’ll get one.”

That night, I received a message from my attorney.

Megan, Derek has filed an emergency motion.

My heart sank.

Then another message came.

He is requesting immediate custody.

I stared at the screen.

The old fear tried to come back.

The fear that had controlled me for years.

But then Emily made a small sound beside me.

I looked at her.

And I remembered.

I wasn’t fighting alone anymore.

I picked up my phone.

And I called Claire.

“I’m ready.”

“Ready for what?”

I looked at my daughter.

“To stop running.”

A pause.

Then I said:

“I’m ready to fight.”

Because Derek thought the woman who left him was broken.

He was about to learn something different.

She had finally become someone he couldn’t control.
