Chapter 7 - CORNERED RATS

Two days later, Julian’s court-appointed attorney requested an emergency meeting.
We met in a sterile glass conference room on the twentieth floor of Daniel’s building.
Julian looked unrecognizable.
His dark hair was greasy, his designer suit replaced by a wrinkled shirt he must have borrowed from a friend, and the arrogant glow in his eyes had been completely extinguished.
Beatrice sat beside him, looking ten years older, her hands trembling as she adjusted her cheap pearl necklace.
“Harper,” Julian started, his voice cracking. “Please. We can settle this privately. You don't have to ruin my life.”
I sat opposite him, completely motionless, hands folded in my lap.
“You ruined your life the moment you brought that girl into my home,” I said cleanly. “I am simply liquidating the damage.”
His lawyer stepped in, trying to salvage the situation.
“Mrs. Caldwell, my client is prepared to sign a non-disclosure agreement and waive his rights to the house if you drop the corporate fraud charges.”
Daniel laughed out loud.

It was a sharp, barking sound that made Julian flinch.
“Your client transferred eighty-five thousand dollars from Harper’s business account into a private crypto wallet last week,” Daniel said, slapping a bank record on the table. “That’s not a marital dispute. That’s a felony. He signs over everything, or he wears an orange jumpsuit for the next five years.”
