Chapter 4 - UNLOCKING THE TRUTH

“You were right about one thing, Beatrice,” I continued, walking past her toward the locked door. “A woman who gives without counting is a fool. But a woman who counts after being betrayed is a nightmare.”

I pulled the heavy brass key from my pocket.

Julian’s family backed away, unable to look me in the eye.

I inserted the key into the lock and turned it.

The metallic click sounded like a gunshot in the quiet corridor.

I pulled the door open, stepping back to let the steam pour out into the hallway.

The smell of expensive lavender soap filled the air, mingled with the stench of sweat and panic.

Inside, Julian and Mia were huddled together in the empty, drained heart-shaped tub.

Julian was naked, trying desperately to cover himself with a small bath mat that barely reached his thighs.

Mia was cowering behind him, her wet white dress sticking to her skin, her eyes wide and bloodshot.

The candles were still burning in the wall niches, casting a soft, romantic light over the scene of their ultimate disgrace.

Richard stared in utter disgust.

Clara turned her back entirely.

“Happy tenth anniversary, Julian,” I said quietly.
