Chapter 9 - THE TRUTH DANIEL BURIED

The sound of Daniel’s footsteps echoed through the underground room.

Slow.

Confident.

Like a man who had already won.

Elena grabbed Perrin’s hand.

“James, we need to go.”

I looked at her.

After three years of believing she was gone, I finally had her standing in front of me.

And now I had to run.

Again.

“No.”

Everyone looked at me.

I tightened my fists.

“I’m done running.”

Daniel’s voice came closer.

“You always were stubborn.”

I stepped toward the entrance.

“Come out and say that to my face.”

A laugh came from the darkness.

“You still think this is about courage.”

Daniel appeared at the top of the stairs.

His expensive suit was untouched.

His expression was calm.

Almost friendly.

That was the worst part.

He didn’t look like a criminal.

He looked like the same man who used to sit beside me at dinner.

The same man who called me his brother.

“You destroyed my family,” I said.

Daniel tilted his head.

“No, James.”

He smiled.

“You destroyed yours.”

Elena stepped forward.

“Stop lying.”

Daniel looked at her.

And for the first time, his calm expression cracked.

“You should have stayed hidden.”

Perrin moved closer to Elena.

“You’re the bad man.”

Daniel looked at him.

A cold smile appeared.

“Children always see things so simply.”

I moved between them.

“You stay away from my son.”

Daniel ignored me.

Instead, he pulled out a folder.

“I came here because I wanted to give you a choice.”

I laughed.

“A choice?”

“Yes.”

He threw the folder onto the floor.

Inside were documents.

Property transfers.

Company records.

Bank accounts.

Everything.

“You can walk away.”

I looked through the papers.

My company.

My home.

My entire life.

All connected to Daniel.

“You planned this.”

“I improved it.”

My anger exploded.

“You stole everything from me.”

Daniel shook his head.

“I built everything while you played the hero.”

Elena looked at him with disgust.

“You never loved power.”

Daniel smiled.

“No.”

He looked at me.

“I loved winning.”

Then the basement door slammed shut.

A lock clicked.

Daniel walked away.

“You have one hour.”

I ran toward the door.

“Daniel!”

His voice came from above.

“After that, the police will find evidence proving James Carter murdered his wife.”

My blood froze.

Elena whispered:

“He’s going to frame you again.”

May you like

And this time

he planned to make sure nobody could save me.
