Chapter 13 - THE SECRET ELENA NEVER TOLD ME

The sound of Daniel’s handcuffs echoed through the room.

For the first time in years

he was powerless.

The man who controlled my company.

The man who destroyed my marriage.

The man who turned my own home into a prison.

Was finally being taken away.

But I couldn’t celebrate.

Because I was looking at Elena.

And she looked terrified.

Not because Daniel was gone.

Because of what he had said.

“Ask Elena what she did before she disappeared.”

Those words kept repeating in my head.

I waited until the police left.

Until the reporters disappeared.

Until Perrin was asleep.

Then I found Elena sitting alone in the kitchen.

The same kitchen where we used to make breakfast together.

The same place where she laughed when Perrin spilled orange juice everywhere.

A lifetime ago.

“Tell me.”

She looked up.

Her eyes were already filled with tears.

“James
”

“No more secrets.”

She nodded slowly.

“You deserve the truth.”

I sat across from her.

My heart was heavy.

“When Daniel said you did something
”

She closed her eyes.

“I did.”

The words hurt more than I expected.

“What did you do?”

She looked down at her hands.

“Before the accident, I found out Daniel was stealing money from your company.”

“I know that.”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“You don’t know everything.”

A cold feeling moved through me.

“I confronted him.”

Elena continued.

“He admitted it.”

“Then why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because he showed me something.”

“What?”

She looked at me.

“Evidence that made me believe you knew.”

I froze.

“He showed me fake messages between you and him.”

My breathing slowed.

“He made it look like you were helping him.”

Elena wiped her tears.

“I was pregnant with Perrin at the time. I was scared.”

I reached for her hand.

“What happened next?”

“I secretly copied everything Daniel had.”

She paused.

“And I contacted someone who could expose him.”

“Who?”

She looked toward Victor.

“His former partner.”

Victor lowered his eyes.

“I was the one who helped her.”

I looked at him.

“Then why disappear?”

Elena’s voice became quiet.

“Because Daniel found out.”

She swallowed.

“The night of the accident, he chased me.”

The room went silent.

“He wanted the evidence.”

My fists tightened.

“And you crashed.”

She nodded.

“But I survived.”

“Then why didn’t you come home?”

A tear fell down her cheek.

“Because I saw you.”

My confusion grew.

“You saw me?”

“Yes.”

She looked broken.

“I saw Daniel talking to you at the hospital.”

I remembered.

The night of the accident.

Daniel had visited me.

He told me Elena was gone.

He hugged me.

He cried with me.

“He convinced me you were working with him.”

My heart broke.

“You thought I betrayed you.”

“Yes.”

Her voice cracked.

“I thought the man I loved helped destroy my life.”

Silence filled the room.

After everything

after all the pain

the truth was finally clear.

We were both victims of the same person.

But then Elena whispered:

“There is one more thing.”

I looked at her.

“What?”

She hesitated.

“Daniel wasn’t the only person involved.”

My stomach tightened.

“Who else?”

She looked toward the hallway.

Toward Perrin’s room.

May you like

“The person who helped him
”

was someone inside our family.
