Chapter 6 - THE FRIEND WHO STOLE MY LIFE

I wanted to hit him.

Every part of me wanted to.

Three years of grief.

Three years of believing my wife was dead.

Three years of watching my son grow up without his mother.

And the man responsible was standing ten feet away.

Smiling.

“Daniel.”

He looked around the room.

“You’re angry.”

I laughed.

“You think?”

He sighed.

“James, you always were emotional.”

That sentence almost broke my control.

“You destroyed my family.”

“No.”

He shook his head.

“I saved you.”

I stared at him.

“Saved me?”

“Yes.”

He stepped closer.

“You had no idea what Elena discovered.”

Victor moved beside me.

“Don’t listen to him.”

Daniel smiled.

“Still protecting her?”

Then he looked at me.

“You should ask Victor why he was really with Elena.”

Victor’s face changed.

Just slightly.

But I noticed.

Everyone in this house had secrets.

Everyone.

Daniel continued.

“Your wife trusted the wrong people.”

I looked at him.

“Like you?”

His smile disappeared.

For the first time

he looked angry.

“You have no idea how much I sacrificed.”

I stepped forward.

“You sacrificed my family.”

Daniel lowered his voice.

“You want the truth?”

“Yes.”

“Your wife found proof that someone inside your company was stealing millions.”

“I know.”

“No.”

He smiled.

“You know the story everyone wants you to know.”

He pulled out his phone.

Pressed a button.

And played a recording.

Elena’s voice filled the room.

“If anything happens to me, James cannot know the truth.”

My heart stopped.

The recording continued.

“He will not believe me.”

I felt the room spinning.

Daniel looked at me.

“She was afraid of you.”

“No.”

I whispered.

“No.”

But then another voice appeared.

My own.

From the recording.

“I swear, Elena. If you destroy everything I built, I’ll make sure you regret it.”

I stopped breathing.

I had said those words.

But I remembered the conversation differently.

I had been angry.

Not threatening.

Someone had edited it.

Manipulated it.

Daniel watched my reaction.

“Now you understand.”

I looked at him.

“You framed me.”

He smiled.

And that smile told me everything.

Before I could move

a gunshot exploded.

The window behind Daniel shattered.

Everyone dropped.

Perrin screamed.

Victor pulled him down.

And Daniel disappeared into the darkness.

Someone had tried to kill him.

Or silence him.

The question was
