Chapter 1 - THE VOICE BEHIND THE WALL

The first thing I heard when I came home after six months awayâŠ
was my son crying from inside a wall.
I didnât hear a welcome.
I didnât hear laughter.
I didnât hear the footsteps of the little boy who used to run across the hardwood floor the second he heard my car pull into the driveway.
I heard a terrified whisper coming from somewhere no child should ever be.
âDadâŠâ
I froze in the hallway.
My hand was still wrapped around my suitcase handle.
For a moment, my exhausted mind tried to explain it away.
Maybe I was imagining things.
Maybe I was just tired.
Maybe the long flights, the sleepless nights, and the endless business meetings had finally caught up with me.
Then I heard it again.
âDad⊠please.â
My heart stopped.
Because I knew that voice.
It was my son.
âPerrin?â
I dropped my bag.
It hit the floor with a heavy thud.
âPerrin! Where are you?â
No answer.
Only a quiet sob.
I followed the sound until I reached the hallway beside the library.
A hallway I had walked through a thousand times.
A hallway inside my own house.
But something was different.
The wooden wall panel in front of me was slightly open.
Just enough for sound to escape.
My blood turned cold.
Because I knew there was no room behind that wall.
At leastâŠ
there wasnât supposed to be.
âPerrin, talk to me!â
I grabbed the panel and pulled.
Nothing.
I pulled harder.
The wood cracked.
Whoever built this hidden door didnât want it opened.
That thought sent a wave of anger through me.
Someone had hidden something in my house.
Someone had hidden something from me.
And now my son was trapped inside.
With one final pull, the panel broke away.
Behind it was a narrow hidden room.
Dark.
Dirty.
Cold.
And sitting in the cornerâŠ
was my seven-year-old son.
Perrin.
His knees were pressed against his chest.
His clothes were stained.
His hair was messy.
And in his hands was the torn remains of his favorite stuffed dog.
The moment he saw me, his eyes widened.
âDad?â
I dropped to my knees.
âOh my GodâŠâ
I reached for him.
But Perrin didnât move.
He stared at me like he was afraid I wasnât real.
âDadâŠâ
His voice shook.
âIs it really you?â
That sentence broke something inside me.
I grabbed him and pulled him into my arms.
âYes.â
My voice cracked.
âItâs me.â
The second he felt me holding him, he started crying.
Not normal crying.
The kind of crying a child does when they have been holding pain inside for too long.
âIâm sorry,â he whispered.
My eyes burned.
âFor what?â
âI tried to be quiet.â
I pulled back.
âWhat?â
His face was covered in tears.
âShe said if I made noise, you would leave again.â
My entire body went still.
âWho said that?â
Perrin looked over my shoulder.
And I already knew the answer.
Slowly, I turned around.
At the end of the hallway stood Rhea.
My fiancée.
The woman who had promised to protect my son.
The woman who had smiled during every video call while I was away.
The woman who had told me:
âDonât worry. Perrin is safe with me.â
Now she stood there like a person watching her entire lie collapse.
âWhat did you do?â I whispered.
Rhea swallowed.
âJamesâŠâ
âDonât say my name.â
My voice came out colder than I expected.
âExplain why my son was locked inside a hidden room.â
Her eyes moved toward Perrin.
Then back to me.
âItâs not what you think.â
I laughed once.
A painful, empty sound.
âMy child was trapped behind a wall.â
âJames, listenââ
âNo.â
I stepped forward.
âYou listen.â
The woman I planned to marry suddenly looked like a stranger.
âWhere is his mother?â
The question changed everything.
Rheaâs face froze.
Just for one second.
But it was enough.
Because I saw it.
Fear.
Real fear.
And that was when I knew.

There was something much bigger happening inside my own house.
Something nobody wanted me to discover.
