Chapter 14 - THE LAST BETRAYAL

I didnât sleep that night.
I couldnât.
Too many memories.
Too many questions.
Too many people I trusted.
The next morning, I gathered everyone.
Elena.
Victor.
Rhea.
Even my attorney, who was now cooperating with investigators.
âWe need the truth.â
Nobody spoke.
Finally, Victor placed a file on the table.
âWe found the connection.â
Inside were old records.
Messages.
Financial transfers.
And one name.
My fatherâs brother.
My uncle Richard.
I stared at the paper.
âNo.â
Victor nodded.
âHe helped Daniel hide the money.â
I felt sick.
Richard had been part of my family my entire life.
He attended my wedding.
He held Perrin as a baby.
He called me his son.
âHow?â
Elena answered.
âDaniel needed someone close enough to control the company.â
âAnd Richard?â
âHe wanted your inheritance.â
I laughed bitterly.
âSo everyone wanted something from me.â
Elena reached for my hand.
âNot everyone.â
I looked at Perrinâs bedroom door.
My son.
The only person who never lied to me.
A knock came from the front door.
Everyone froze.
I opened it carefully.
And there he was.
Richard.
Older.
Tired.
But still wearing that familiar smile.
âJames.â
My blood ran cold.
âHow did you get out?â
He smiled.
âOut of what?â
âThe police know everything.â
He laughed.
âYou still think Daniel was the mastermind.â
I stared at him.
âWhat are you saying?â
Richard stepped inside.
âHe was just a tool.â
Nobody moved.
Victor whispered:
âNoâŠâ
Richard smiled.
âThe real plan started twenty years ago.â
My chest tightened.
âWhat plan?â
He looked around the house.
âThis family was always supposed to belong to me.â
Anger replaced fear.
âYou destroyed my life.â
âNo.â
He shook his head.
âI corrected a mistake.â
He pulled out a small device.
A remote.
My eyes widened.
âWhat is that?â
Richard smiled.
âThe security system.â
The lights suddenly went off.
Every door locked.
Every window sealed.
The house became a prison again.
Just like before.
Perrin ran toward me.
âDad!â
I grabbed him.
Richardâs voice came through the speakers.
âYou spent so much time looking for the hidden roomâŠâ
A pause.
âYou forgot there were more.â
My heart stopped.
âWhat did you do?â
Richard laughed.
âWelcome home, James.â
Then the floor beneath us started to shake.
A hidden panel opened.
May you like
And beneath itâŠ
was another secret room.
