Chapter 6 - THE MAN WHO STOPPED TRUSTING EVERYONE

Nathan Whitmore trusted very few people.
After today…
he trusted even fewer.
The driver sat silently behind the wheel.
Too silent.
Nathan watched him through the reflection of the window.
“What’s your name?”
The man looked in the mirror.
“Eric.”
Nathan nodded.
“Eric what?”
A pause.
“Eric Miller.”
Nathan smiled slightly.
A fake name.
Bad choice.
Because Nathan had already checked.
The real Eric Miller died four years ago.
Nathan slowly reached into his pocket.
Not for a weapon.
For his phone.
He sent one message.
WE HAVE A PROBLEM.
The car turned away from the usual route.
Nathan noticed immediately.
“Where are we going?”
“Traffic.”
“There’s no traffic.”
The driver said nothing.
Nathan looked outside.
Empty roads.
Industrial area.
No people.
No cameras.
A trap.
He almost admired the confidence.
Almost.
“Who sent you?”
The driver’s hands tightened.
“You ask too many questions.”
Nathan smiled.
“And you answer too slowly.”
The driver suddenly reached under his jacket.
Nathan reacted instantly.
The fight was violent and fast.
The car swerved.
The driver tried to grab him.
Nathan slammed his arm against the window.
The vehicle crashed into a barrier.
Both men stopped.
Breathing heavily.
The driver looked at Nathan.
“You have no idea what’s coming.”
Nathan wiped blood from his lip.
“Neither do you.”
The driver laughed.
“You think you’re winning?”
He looked at Nathan.
“Your fiancée already chose a side.”
Nathan’s expression changed.
The driver smiled.
“Ask her about the night your father died.”
Then he swallowed something.
Nathan grabbed him.
“What did you take?”
But it was too late.
The man collapsed.
Dead.
Two hours later, Nathan sat in his office.
The room was silent.
The driver’s final words repeated in his mind.
Ask her about the night your father died.
His mother.
His father.
Victoria.
Dominic.
Everything was connected.
Then Margaret entered.
She looked worried.
“Mr. Whitmore?”
Nathan looked up.
“Yes?”
“I found something else.”
She placed an old envelope on the desk.
Nathan recognized the handwriting immediately.
His mother’s.
His hands shook slightly.
“What is this?”
“I don’t know.”
Nathan opened it.
Inside was a letter.
Only three sentences.
But they changed everything.
Nathan, if you are reading this, then Dominic has found you.
Do not trust the woman wearing your ring.
She knows why your father really died.
Nathan stopped breathing.
Slowly…
he looked toward the second floor.
Toward Victoria’s bedroom.
The woman he planned to marry.
The woman he once believed would stand beside him forever.
Now he knew.
She had answers.
And she had been hiding them.
At that exact moment…
Victoria stood outside his office door.
She had heard everything.
She knew Nathan had found the letter.
She knew the game was over.
She walked away slowly.
Then she made one phone call.
“Dominic.”
Her voice was shaking.
“He knows.”
A long silence.
Then Dominic answered:
“Then tonight…”
May you like
A pause.
“…we finish this.”
