Chapter 11 - THE MAN WHO WAS SUPPOSED TO BE DEAD

The voice from the speakers filled the room.

Calm.

Confident.

Almost amused.

“Hello, Nathan.”

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

Because everyone understood the impossible.

Richard Whitmore was alive.

Nathan’s uncle.

The man who died twenty years ago.

The man whose funeral Nathan remembered.

The man whose name had disappeared from every family record.

“How?”

Nathan whispered.

The speakers crackled.

“People believe what they are told.”

Nathan stared at the ceiling.

“You faked your death.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

A short laugh.

“Because dead men are invisible.”

The doors suddenly locked.

The windows closed automatically.

Nathan looked around.

The house security system had been taken over.

Richard was controlling everything.

Dominic looked angry.

“You said he would never find us.”

The voice answered:

“And yet he did.”

Dominic’s face darkened.

“You’re losing control.”

Richard laughed.

“No.”

A pause.

“I’m finally taking it.”

Nathan looked at James.

“You knew.”

James nodded slowly.

“Yes.”

“How long?”

James looked ashamed.

“Since the beginning.”

Nathan shook his head.

“Why?”

James looked at Dominic.

Then the speakers.

“Because Richard owned everyone.”

Nathan stared.

“What does that mean?”

James answered:

“He didn’t threaten people with money.”

A pause.

“He threatened them with secrets.”

The screen above the fireplace suddenly turned on.

A video appeared.

Nathan’s father.

Twenty years younger.

Sitting in his office.

Nathan stopped breathing.

His father looked terrified.

A voice behind the camera spoke.

Richard.

“I gave you a choice.”

Nathan watched.

His father answered:

“You’re destroying this family.”

Richard laughed.

“No. I’m saving it.”

The video ended.

Nathan stood frozen.

Then another file appeared.

His mother.

The same office.

The same fear.

But this time Nathan heard something that broke him.

His mother was crying.

“Please, Richard.”

The voice responded:

“You should have stayed quiet.”

The screen went black.

Nathan closed his eyes.

All his life, he thought his parents had lost.

Now he understood.

They had been fighting someone invisible.

Someone inside their own family.

Someone who knew every move before they made it.

Richard’s voice returned.

“Nathan.”

No answer.

“You have built an impressive empire.”

Nathan looked up.

“You killed my family.”

Richard laughed softly.

“No.”

“You ruined their lives.”

“No.”

The voice became colder.

“I improved their mistakes.”

Nathan’s anger exploded.

“You’re insane.”

“Maybe.”

A pause.

“But I’m also right.”

Then Richard revealed the truth.

“Your father was going to expose me.”

Nathan listened.

“So I gave him a choice.”

“What choice?”

“Join me.”

Nathan’s hands tightened.

“He refused.”

“Yes.”

Richard continued.

“So I destroyed his company.”

Silence.

“Your mother discovered everything.”

Nathan felt tears forming.

“And you killed her.”

“No.”

Richard’s voice became quiet.

“She died because she trusted the wrong person.”

Everyone looked at Samuel.

The old attorney looked away.

Nathan noticed.

“What does that mean?”

Richard answered:

“Ask Samuel what was in the medicine bottle.”

The room went silent.

Nathan turned slowly.

Toward Samuel.

Samuel’s face changed.

“Nathan…”

Nathan stepped back.

“No.”

The old man’s eyes filled with regret.

“I can explain.”

Nathan’s voice shook.

“You gave her something.”

Samuel whispered:

“I was forced.”

Nathan looked at him.

“Everyone says that.”

Suddenly, the security doors opened.

A man entered.

Older.

Gray hair.

Cold eyes.

Richard Whitmore.

Alive.

Nathan stared at the man who had haunted his family for twenty years.

Richard smiled.

“Hello, nephew.”

Nathan looked at him.

May you like

And said only one thing:

“You should have stayed dead.”
