Chapter 3 - THE TRUTH UNDER THE DIAMOND RING

Nathan didn’t sleep.
Not because he was angry.
Anger was easy.
He was hurt.
That was harder.
Because every memory he had with Victoria now felt different.
Their first dinner.
Their first kiss.
The night he proposed.
Was any of it real?
At 5:00 a.m., Nathan walked into the empty kitchen.
Margaret was already there.
She looked surprised.
“You should be resting.”
Nathan poured coffee.
“So should you.”
She smiled sadly.
“I’m used to taking care of everyone else.”
Nathan looked at her.
“And who takes care of you?”
Margaret didn’t answer.
That silence told him everything.
Nathan placed a hand on the table.
“I’m sorry.”
Her eyes widened.
“For what?”
“For not seeing it.”
Margaret looked away.
“People like Miss Caldwell are good at hiding who they are.”
Nathan shook his head.
“No.”
He looked toward the hallway.
“I was good at believing what I wanted to believe.”
At 9:00 a.m., Nathan made a decision.
He would not expose Victoria yet.
Not until he knew everything.
He wanted the truth.
All of it.
He called James.
“Find out everything about Dominic Rainer’s connection to Victoria.”
“Yes, sir.”
“And James?”
“Yes?”
“Do not let them know we’re investigating.”
A pause.
“Understood.”
Meanwhile, Victoria believed she was winning.
She met Dominic Rainer at a private club.
“You’re sure Nathan suspects nothing?”
Dominic smiled.
“Nathan Whitmore is arrogant.”
Victoria laughed.
“He thinks money makes him untouchable.”
Dominic looked at her.
“And you?”
Victoria touched her engagement ring.
“He trusts me.”
Dominic smiled.
“Good.”
He placed a folder on the table.
“Soon, you’ll be the woman controlling the Whitmore empire.”
Victoria opened the folder.
Inside was a final contract.
Her eyes lit up.
“When does he sign?”
“Three days.”
Victoria smiled.
“Perfect.”
But neither of them knew Nathan was already listening.
Not through a hidden microphone.
Not through illegal surveillance.
Through something much simpler.
A person they forgot existed.
Someone they thought was invisible.
The housekeeper.
Margaret.
She had spent seven years learning every sound in that house.
Every visitor.
Every secret.
And now she had one final piece of information.
That evening, Margaret walked into Nathan’s office holding another envelope.
“Mr. Whitmore.”
Nathan looked up.
“What is it?”
She placed it on his desk.
“I found this hidden behind Miss Caldwell’s bedroom drawer.”
Nathan opened it.
Inside was a photograph.
His mother.
Taken twenty years ago.
Nathan’s heart stopped.
Because written on the back were six words:
Your mother knew the truth.
Nathan slowly turned the photo over.
And his world changed.
Because beneath the message was a signature.
A name he had not seen in twenty years.
A name connected to the darkest secret of his family.
Dominic Rainer.
Nathan stared at the photograph.
Then whispered:
“What did you do, Mom?”
May you like
And for the first time in years…
Nathan Whitmore was afraid.
