Chapter 12 - THE FINAL MOVE

Richard Whitmore looked exactly like the ghost Nathan remembered.
Older.
But not weaker.
The kind of man who didn’t need to raise his voice because everyone already knew what he was capable of.
He walked into the room like he owned it.
Because he believed he did.
“Nathan.”
The young man stared at him.
“You destroyed my family.”
Richard sighed.
“That word again.”
“Family.”
He smiled.
“You still think family means loyalty.”
Nathan stepped closer.
“What does it mean to you?”
Richard looked around.
“Power.”
Dominic suddenly moved.
He pulled out a weapon.
“You’re finished.”
Richard didn’t even look surprised.
“You always were impatient, Dominic.”
Dominic pointed the gun.
“You used me.”
“Yes.”
The answer was immediate.
Dominic froze.
Richard smiled.
“Everyone was useful.”
Nathan watched.
The truth was finally visible.
Dominic wasn’t the mastermind.
Victoria wasn’t.
James wasn’t.
They were all pieces.
Richard had been moving them from the beginning.
Dominic fired.
Nathan reacted.
The shot missed.
Chaos erupted.
Security guards appeared from hidden doors.
People ran.
Glass shattered.
Victoria grabbed Nathan.
“Move!”
They escaped into the hallway.
Nathan looked at her.
“You saved me.”
She looked away.
“I owe you that much.”
“You owe me more than that.”
Victoria stopped.
“I know.”
They reached the old library.
Nathan locked the door.
For a moment, there was silence.
Then Victoria spoke.
“I need to tell you everything.”
Nathan looked at her.
“No more lies.”
She nodded.
“No more.”
She took off the engagement ring.
Placed it on the table.
“I never deserved this.”
Nathan looked at the ring.
The symbol of a future that never existed.
“Why did you stay?”
Victoria’s eyes filled with tears.
“Because somewhere along the way…”
She swallowed.
“I stopped pretending.”
Nathan said nothing.
“I started loving you.”
The silence hurt.
Because Nathan believed her.
And that made everything worse.
Victoria continued.
“Dominic threatened my younger brother.”
Nathan looked at her.
“You have a brother?”
“Yes.”
“Where is he?”
“Hidden.”
“Alive?”
She nodded.
“But Richard knows where he is.”
Nathan understood.
She wasn’t just trapped.
She was controlled.
A sound came from the hallway.
Someone approaching.
Nathan prepared himself.
The door opened.
It was Margaret.
But she wasn’t alone.
She was holding a small box.
“Mr. Whitmore.”
Nathan looked at it.
“What is that?”
Margaret handed it to him.
“Your mother left this with me.”
Nathan opened it.
Inside was a small recording device.
An old one.
His hands shook.
“She said only give it to you when Richard returned.”
Nathan pressed play.
Static.
Then his mother’s voice.
“Nathan…”
He stopped breathing.
“If you are hearing this, then Richard has come back.”
A pause.
“I’m sorry.”
Tears filled Nathan’s eyes.
“I wanted to protect you.”
Her voice cracked.
“But I failed.”
Nathan closed his eyes.
Then she said the words that changed everything.
“Richard was never afraid of your father discovering his crimes.”
A pause.
“He was afraid your father discovered something worse.”
Nathan opened his eyes.
“What?”
His mother continued:
“The Whitmore family fortune…”
Static.
“The money was never ours.”
Nathan froze.
The recording continued.
“It belonged to someone else.”
The audio cut.
A single sentence remained.
A secret bigger than murder.
Bigger than betrayal.
Bigger than the empire itself.
Nathan looked at Margaret.
“What did she mean?”
Margaret shook her head.
“I don’t know.”
Then the lights flickered.
A message appeared on the library screen.
A single sentence.
COME ALONE, NATHAN.
Underneath it was a name.
Not Richard.
Not Dominic.
Not Samuel.
Someone else.
May you like
Someone Nathan had never suspected.
Someone who had been watching the entire time.
