Chapter 13 - THE TRUTH BEHIND THE WHITMORE EMPIRE

The message on the screen stayed there.
COME ALONE, NATHAN.
And beneath it…
a name.
A name that made everyone in the room go silent.
ELIZABETH WHITMORE.
Nathan stared at the screen.
For several seconds, he forgot how to breathe.
Elizabeth.
His mother.
The woman he had buried twenty years ago.
The woman whose voice he had just heard.
The woman everyone believed was gone.
“No.”
The word escaped his lips.
Margaret looked confused.
“Mr. Whitmore?”
Nathan stepped closer to the screen.
“That’s impossible.”
Victoria watched him carefully.
“Nathan…”
He turned.
“My mother is dead.”
Nobody answered.
And that silence was terrifying.
Because everyone knew something he didn’t.
A hidden door behind the library bookshelf slowly opened.
Nathan immediately reached for the weapon on the table.
But Margaret stopped him.
“Wait.”
The door opened completely.
A woman stepped out.
Older.
Tired.
But alive.
Nathan’s entire world stopped.
“Mom?”
The woman’s eyes filled with tears.
“Nathan.”
The gun slipped from his hand.
For twenty years, he had dreamed about this moment.
Seeing her.
Hearing her voice.
But never like this.
Not in a room full of betrayal and lies.
Not after believing she was gone.
“You’re alive.”
Elizabeth Whitmore nodded.
“I am.”
Nathan stared at her.
“Why?”
One word.
But it carried twenty years of pain.
“Why did you let me think you were dead?”
Elizabeth looked down.
“Because if Richard knew I survived, you would have died too.”
Nathan laughed bitterly.
“So you disappeared?”
“I protected you.”
Nathan’s eyes hardened.
“Everyone keeps saying that.”
The room went silent.
Nathan looked at his mother.
“At what point does protecting someone become another kind of lie?”
Elizabeth closed her eyes.
Because she knew he was right.
Richard’s voice suddenly came through the speakers.
“You see, Nathan?”
Everyone turned.
“He always wanted the truth.”
The screen turned on.
Richard appeared from another room inside the house.
“You lied to him for twenty years.”
Elizabeth looked at the screen.
“You never change.”
Richard smiled.
“Neither do you.”
Nathan looked between them.
“You two know each other.”
Elizabeth answered quietly.
“Yes.”
“How?”
She hesitated.
Then said:
“Because Richard wasn’t always my enemy.”
Nathan froze.
“What?”
Elizabeth looked at him.
“Richard was my brother.”
The room went silent.
Nathan looked toward Richard.
“My uncle.”
“Yes.”
“But you hated each other.”
Elizabeth nodded.
“Because he betrayed our family.”
Richard laughed.
“Your mother always loved playing the victim.”
Nathan turned toward the screen.
“Then tell me the truth.”
Richard smiled.
“Fine.”
He looked directly at Nathan.
“The Whitmore empire was never built by your grandfather.”
A pause.
“It was built from stolen money.”
Nathan felt cold.
“What?”
Elizabeth whispered:
“Your grandfather made a deal.”
Richard continued.
“He took money from a criminal organization.”
Nathan stared.
“And my father?”
“Your father discovered it.”
The room became heavier.
“He wanted to return everything.”
Richard smiled.
“And that’s why he had to disappear.”
Nathan looked at his mother.
“Who are we really?”
Elizabeth’s eyes filled with sadness.
“That is the question your father died trying to answer.”
She walked to the table.
Placed an old document down.
“This is the original agreement.”
Nathan opened it.
His hands shook.
The document was signed decades ago.
But the name at the bottom was not Whitmore.
It was a name Nathan had never seen.
A family.
A powerful organization that had controlled money, companies, and governments from the shadows.
Nathan looked up.
“Why are you showing me this?”
Elizabeth looked at him.
“Because they are coming.”
“Who?”
Her voice dropped.
“The people who own everything.”
Suddenly, every phone in the room received the same message.
One sentence.
THE HEIR HAS BEEN FOUND.
Nathan looked at the screen.
Then at everyone around him.
The war was no longer between Whitmore and Rainer.
It was bigger.
Much bigger.
And Nathan finally understood.
May you like
The empire he built…
was never completely his.
