Chapter 5 - THE WOMAN WHO PLAYED THE PERFECT FIANCÉE

Victoria Caldwell smiled at herself in the mirror.
The woman staring back looked perfect.
Beautiful.
Elegant.
Powerful.
Nobody would ever believe she was afraid.
But she was.
Because Nathan had changed.
She noticed it.
The way he looked at her.
The way he stopped touching her.
The way he listened more than he spoke.
Nathan Whitmore was not a man who missed details.
And now she wondered how much he knew.
That morning, Nathan walked into the dining room.
Victoria was waiting.
“You’ve been quiet.”
Nathan sat down.
“Have I?”
“Yes.”
She smiled.
“Is something wrong?”
Nathan looked at her engagement ring.
“No.”
A lie.
A small one.
But he wanted to see if she noticed.
She did.
Victoria’s eyes moved slightly.
Then she smiled.
“You’re tired.”
Nathan almost laughed.
She was good.
Very good.
“How was your meeting yesterday?”
“With who?”
“Your business team.”
Nathan watched her carefully.
She knew.
She always knew more than she should.
“Fine.”
Victoria reached across the table.
“Nathan.”
He looked at her.
“I love you.”
The words sounded perfect.
Almost rehearsed.
Nathan wondered how many times she had practiced them.
“I love you too,” he said.
And for the first time in his life…
he hated saying it.
That afternoon, Nathan’s investigator delivered the final report.
Victoria Caldwell.
Twenty-nine years old.
No significant wealth.
No powerful family.
No business history.
Until two years ago.
That was when she met Dominic Rainer.
Nathan read every page.
Then he found something disturbing.
Victoria’s entire lifestyle had changed after meeting him.
Luxury apartment.
Designer clothes.
Private events.
Expensive vacations.
All funded by Rainer.
She wasn’t his partner.
She was his investment.
Then James found something else.
Something worse.
“Mr. Whitmore.”
Nathan looked up.
“What?”
“We found the reason Victoria approached you.”
“Tell me.”
James hesitated.
“She didn’t meet you by accident.”
Nathan became still.
“What do you mean?”
“She was sent.”
A cold silence filled the office.
“By who?”
James placed a file down.
“Dominic Rainer.”
Nathan opened it.
Inside was a photo.
Victoria standing beside Dominic three years earlier.
The date was clear.
The photo was taken before she ever met Nathan.
Nathan stared.
His fiancée had entered his life with a mission.
Not love.
Not coincidence.
A plan.
That night, Nathan decided to test her.
He invited Victoria to dinner.
A private restaurant.
No staff.
No cameras.
No distractions.
Halfway through the meal, Nathan casually said:
“I’m thinking about changing the company structure.”
Victoria looked up.
“What kind of changes?”
Nathan smiled.
“I might move certain assets into a protected trust.”
Her expression changed.
Only for a second.
But he saw it.
“What assets?”
Nathan leaned back.
“You’re curious.”
She laughed.
“Of course I’m curious. I’m your fiancée.”
Nathan nodded.
“Exactly.”
A waiter arrived.
The conversation ended.
But Nathan had his answer.
She wasn’t worried about losing him.
She was worried about losing access.
Later that night, Victoria called Dominic.
“She knows.”
Dominic was silent.
“What?”
“She’s not stupid.”
“Did she find out?”
“Not everything.”
Dominic’s voice became colder.
“Then we move faster.”
Victoria swallowed.
“What about Nathan?”
A pause.
Then Dominic answered:
“Remove him.”
Victoria went silent.
“Remove him?”
“Yes.”
“Dominic…”
“You wanted the Whitmore empire.”
His voice hardened.
“Now you have to earn it.”
The next morning, Nathan’s private driver never arrived.
His replacement was a stranger.
A stranger with a familiar tattoo.
A silver crown.
Nathan looked at the man through the window.
And realized something.

The enemy was no longer hiding inside his house.
The enemy was already standing at his door.
